TuS Ferndorf – Die Eulen Ludwigshafen 30-31 (16-15)

For the last sports report of the year, I headed to the Siegerland region East of Cologne. On 13th December 2025, Tus Ferndorf hosted the Eulen (“Owls”) Ludwigshafen in the 2nd Handball Bundesliga. The match was the first time I visited a Ferndorf match at home, after I had featured their match at Dormagen in September 2025. Both, Ferndorf and Ludwigshafen, were teams at the lower part of the league table at that time, fighting to prevent relegation. Thus, I was looking forward to an interesting matchup at Sporthalle Stählerwiese in Kreuztal, where Ferndorf is playing their home matches.

Ferndorf – Ludwigshafen – Match Report

While there was a bit of offensive struggle in the very first minutes, the match was a speedy one with rather fast attacks soon. The referees rarely had to raise their hands exhorting one of the teams for passive play. This all lead to a very interesting and catching game in the 1,205 people packed Sporthalle Stählerwiese from the very first moments. While the score stayed close at the beginning, Ferndorf was able to work out a three goal lead in the 11th minute for the first time, which even boosted the enthusiastic fans. Despite there were some close-ups by the guests, Ferndorf felt to settle with that scoring of three to four goals quite well over a certain period of time. However, they lost the momentum a bit right before the intermission Kian Schwarzer converted a penalty throw right after the buzzer, leading to a close 16-15 lead after thirty minutes.

Turbulent Second Period with a Ludwigshafen Advantage

The second period started similarly. Ludwigshafen managed to tie the score, but after some ten minutes, Ferndorf regained that comfortably-feeling three goal advantage again. However, both teams had situation where they struggled with the opposite defense. Ziga Urbic, the netminder of the guests, had his strongest period in the middle of the second half, so that the Eulen managed to tie the score again (25-25) in the 49th minute. The match stayed close, but the hosts felt to struggle a bit more now. In the 57th minute, Ludwigshafen had a two goal lead for the first time in the match at all.

The last minutes were stunning. The match became more emotional and there were more discussions on the court. Playing in man advantage already, Josip Eres closed up the score to 30-31 by a penalty throw in the last minute. The referees’ arm was up already and Ludwigshafen had just one pass remaining when at nine seconds to play, a defensive action lead to a scuffle and three additional two minute penalties, two for Ferndorf and one for Ludwigshafen. Thus, the last moments were a four-on-four (plus goalies), but also granted Ludwigshafen additional pass attempts. This was a too big burden for Ferndorf to come back at Ludwigshafen finally edged over the frustrated hosts by one goal abroad.

Ferndorf – Ludwigshafen – My View of the Match

Ferndorf felt to control the match, but could not keep that up in the last fifteen minutes of the match. Thus, there was quite a lot of struggle and frustration in Kreuztal on that evening. Nonetheless, the spectators saw a catching match in front of an incredible audience. It was really fun to visit TuS Ferndorf for the first time – I will surely come back to this magical, small arena in the Siegerland region.
