Women WFCQ – Hungary – Netherlands 1-4 (0-1, 0-2, 1-1)

At the end of January 2025, I headed to Lignano Sabbiadoro in Italy, close to Venice. In parallel to two other groups in Latvia, the women floorball national teams competed for the qualifying spots for the 2025 World Floorball Championships. I just had a brief visit on the first day in the Europe Group 2 qualification and headed for my first full day to Palazetto dello Sport on 30th January 2025. Already the first match of that day, on 9:30, was one of the most interesting ones of the week. The Hungarian National Team faced the Netherlands. The winner of that match had quite good chances to qualify for the December tournament in Czechia.

Hungary – Netherlands – Match Report

The match had a rather agile start. The Netherlands felt having the better start, but Hungary had some decent opportunities. Ilse Stoffers gave her team the lead after six minutes, when she converted a central attack. The match had chances on both sides, but the Netherlands and their strong goalkeeper Arianna Scheppers did not allow Hungary to tie the score. Even when an incorrect substitution caused the Dutch playing short-handed (16th), it was Stoffers again, who had the best opportunity for her team in a fast break.

Netherlands raises the lead in the second Period

The second period came with a similar story. The Dutch attacks looked better planned and more straight than the ones by the Hungarians. The latter rather based them on indvidual strength. Anouk Jonker raised the score to 2-0 in the 35th minute – the arms of the referees were already up when she completed her left wing attack. Hungary’s chances in this match got even lower, when Jonker added her second goal three minutes later. Her fast break goal lead to a three goal lead after forty minutes.

Lelovics goal came too late

The match still had a nice intensity in the third period, but time was ticking down from an Hungarian perspective. However, Nora Lelovics scored the first goal for her team after fifty minutes with a left wing snipe. Hungary just slightly opened the match, the Netherlands stayed in control. With 15 seconds left to play, Jonker even added her third goal, leading to a final score of 4-1.

Hungary – Netherlands – My View of the Match

The Netherlands could rely on an excellent Arianna Schreppers and on the better strategy. They also managed well to defend the dangerous Hungary players. Hungary too rarely managed to take profit of that additional space on the other players and thus lost the match deservedly.
