In order to cover the Carrie Welling and Kasey Williams show in Hengelo in the Netherlands in early May 2024. Based on the location close to the venue and the very competitive price, I opten for the Stravinsky Hotel in the heart of the city. In full, the place is called Stravinsky eten drinken slapen, “Stravinsky Eat Drink Sleep”. The place is not only a hotel, but also a cafe and restaurant one of the most popular places for that in the city. Here is my review of the stay (which is, of course, only covering the hotel services).
Stravinsky Hotel Hengelo – Location
The Stravinsky Hotel is located right in the heart of Hengelo. There is a wide variety of bars, restaurants and shopping places around. There are not too many central tourist attractions, but the Dutch city is a nice place to party and enjoy yourself. A grocery store is located right behind the hotel (Albert Heijn).
From the main station, it is a some ten minute walk to the hotel. The scattered cobblestone pavement may be a bit of bothering when you are having heavier luggage. A bit closer to the hotel is the public transport stop Thiemsburg, which is served by bus lines 11 and 65. There are also a few parking garages around. The hotel itself does not have private parking. The Stravinsky restaurant opens daily at 9:00. It closes at midnight Sunday to Wednesday, at 1:00 on Thursdays and at 2:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
Stravinsky Hotel Hengelo – Room
I booked a double room at the Stravinsky for one night, Thursday to Friday, in early May 2024. The double room rate, including breakfast and city tax, was 88.75 EUR. The room was located in the third floor. There is only a staircase, no elevator, which was bothering with the heavy electronic equipment. The room was quite compact. The large bed was right next to the window. Thus, if you use it at double bed, one person might climb over the other during the night. As additionally, the bed is rather high (unfortunately no storage underneath), this might be bothering. However, the room comes with tea and coffee makers a very usable work desk and was handy.
Unfortunately, storing luggage was really a problem due to the small floor space. I also did not dare to put the electronic equipment close to the shower. The bathroom area is open and just right next to the entrance, without any doors or similar. However, the shower went and was well insulated, so you might not fear that water is emerging from it. Basic amenities are provided in the room, which was overall very clean. The rather thin windows and the direct neighborhood to a market square was a bit of bothering, though – especially as there was a fun fair during my stay. On top of that, the room really heated up, without having air conditioning.
Stravinsky Hotel Hengelo – Breakfast
Breakfast at the Stravinsky is served at a separate room, i.e. not in the restaurant area. The room as such is really nice. I would see the selection of items being rather limited. Nonetheless, there were also warm dishes like scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage. However, the quality of food provided at the buffet. I did not run into any staff during my breakfast. This also meant that plates and cutlery from other guests was still on the table. Even though I was not that late, the buffet was running out of some items, like bacon.
Stravinsky Hotel Hengelo – Service
Check in is done at the bar desk of the hotel. The welcoming was rather friendly. There is no contact at check-out. You pay at check-in and put your keys into a box close to the exit. The WiFi n the room was excellent, which I enjoyed during my picture upload quite a lot. A key service of the Stravinsky is, of course, the restaurant. Food looked nice. There is also a QR code in the room, so that they – in theory – bring food into your room. Apart from that this process is a bit unhandy in English and German (the translated menu is on another website), the check-out process also asked me to pay the hotel fee again. Thus, I finally had a bite outside the hotel.
Stravinsky Hotel Hengelo – My View
My experience at the Stravinsky eten drinken slapen was mixed. On the one hand, the staff was quite nice, WiFi worked well. The room design was fine for a single person, but might be bothering for a couple. The staircase does lead to challenges if you have major luggage. The in-room service thing would definitely be nice, if only it worked. As there is no staff at check-out, there was also no chance to feedback and thus to improve.
