After Darren Flynn has grown in the Dublin music scene, he is also trying out some solo recordings. I received a promo of his debut EP The Pinebox from himself and felt it is an interesting one for a review and share on my blog. Here is my review of the 7th August 2026 release.

 

Darren Flynn – About The Artist

Darren Flynn (also Darren A. Flynn) is an Irish singer-songwriter from Dublin. He is a rather popular artist on stage there and also toured several European locations and festivals. Furthermore, he is known as the bassist and guitarist of the rock band Mongrel State. Flynn’s solo music can be described as “alternative Americana”, as he is giving folk and country influences a very individual twist.

 

Darren Flynn – The Pinebox – Track by Track

The five song EP lasts 19 minutes.

1. Pinebox

Darryl Flynn starts his EP with the title track, which has already been released beforehand. They’ll put you in a pinebox and post you home is the key phrase of the opener. It feels very virtuous, sometimes experimental. However, the song also has a very nice dynamics. Towards the end, Flynn pushes for a dramatic finale.

2. Where The Blue Turns To Black

The second song comes with a very gentle, dreaming melody. I like the way Flynn is using and varying his voice creating this very special atmosphere. A really nice, gentle listen with a melancholic touch.

3. I Ain’t Gonna Worry Bout It

The other single release, I Ain’t Gonna Worry Bout It, mixes folk with country music elements. The song is playful and presents a cheerful and happy melody. I really enjoy listening to that.

4. I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For

Okay, I guess I don’t need to say too much about this U2 classic. It is such an icon – and Darren Flynn moves it to his very own landscape. His version feels rhythmic, almost makes you dance. You simply cannot dislike this one.

5. Cassandra’s Song

Cassandra’s Song closes the EP. The song starts calm, but then spreads more energy. It more and more moves towards a lovely folk track with an emotional touch and a lot of energy. A really nice way to close this release.

Darren Flynn – The Pinebox – My View

Darren Flynn’s way of combining different Americana elements with his very special sound is definitely not mainstream. It also takes a bit getting into the sound of The Pinebox. However, the title track already gives you an easy transition – and the more you listen to it, the more you like it. I do – and enjoyed these five tracks.
