Being on some sort of Lufthansa farewell tour after I decided not to prolong my Senator status gave me an interesting opportunity in December 2024. Flying Icelandair in their Boeing 737 MAX Saga Premium Class (Business Class) gave me access to the Lufthansa Lounge at Newark Liberty Airport (EWR) in New Jersey. The lounge has recently been renovated and upgraded and opened to public in August 2024. Here are my impressions.

Lufthansa Lounge Newark EWR  – Location & Access

The lounge is located close to the gates 60 to 68 of Newark’s (EWR) Terminal B, where Lufthansa as well as Icelandair and other airlines operate. Right opposite to the Lufthansa Lounge is the SAS Lounge, which is now majorly serving SkyTeam flights. The Lufthansa lounge is just a few steps away from the gates, so that the location is very convenient.

In line with the operations, the Lufthansa Lounge at Newark Airport (EWR) is opening daily, from 14:15 to 21:30. If you are flying Lufthansa Group, you need to be Star Alliance Gold, Business Class flyer or Lufthansa Frequent Traveler to gain access. Of course, the lounge is also open to First Class travelers and HON Circle members. They have a separate area in the lounge (see below). Apart from that, Lufthansa contracted to a few airlines departing from the same gate area, like Icelandair. They also serve a few Star Alliance airlines, like TAP flights to Lisbon. There is no separation into a Business Class and Senator Lounge any more.

Lufthansa Lounge Newark EWR – Atmosphere

If you happen to know the old Lufthansa Lounges at Newark, the upgrade has really been incredible. The heart of the lounge is the large bar which is like an island on the reception desk. The buffet section also feels much more welcoming and friendly. In the rear of the lounge, there are also more cozy seating options and a large work desk, which felt very nice. There are also two working rooms for meetings or a phone call. The lounge was rather packed at the beginning, so that I could not take picture – but when the first wave of Lufthansa flights departed, it was a very relaxed atmosphere in there. It’s a bit of weird that the lounge solely features US style power outlets as well as USB ports. However, these are spread all over the lounge area.

There is a separate section with more privacy for First Class guests. I could not have a look into that, unfortunately. People in there can also select dining and wine from a menu.

Lufthansa Lounge Newark EWR – Food & Drink

The food and drink options were really improved compared to what the lounge has been alike before renovation. There were a few warm dishes, fruit, salad, some dessert, sandwiches and breads you could choose from. The selection leaned rather towards local cuisine and did not have typical German dishes. I could not check out the bar (as I was on painkillers during my trip) entirely, but they also have a quite nice and decent menu.

Lufthansa Lounge Newark EWR – Services

The staff was very attentive and friendly. WiFi provided by Telekom was very good and did not lead to any issues. The lounge also has own bathrooms (which are not too stylish), but no showers. The location of the flight information monitors was not ideal, though.

Lufthansa Lounge Newark EWR – My View

The recent upgrade of the lounge was really a great choice. Lufthansa invested into the right parameters, a better bar and food choice as well as an improved capacity. Nonetheless, the lounge may be very packed during peak travel times, i.e. when the Lufthansa Group flights are departing. Nonetheless, the updated Lufthansa Lounge is definitely a nice place to hang out before a flight.
