During a trip to Liege / Luik in Belgium, i took a short detour from a shopping mall to visit the Musée des Transports en commun de Wallonie. The “Museum of Public Transport of Wallonia” (almost anything in Belgium is split between the French-speaking and the Dutch-part). I was really cool, how this place, which is closed in winter, will be alike. In French, it is also abbreviated with MTC. 

 

Museum of Public Transport of Wallonia – Location & Admission

The museum is located in Central Liege in Belgium It rather close to the shopping mall Mediacite. The closest bus station is Hotel de Police, which is served by bus lines 4, 26, and 31. I walked from the mall to the museum. However, there is also a parking lot belonging to the place. The museum is fully accessible.

The museum is only open from Match until November. In other rmonths, you need to make an appointment between Monday and Friday. Main season opening times are 10:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and 14:00 to 18:00 on weekends and public holidays. The adult admission of individual visitors is 6 Euro and includes an audio guide.

 

Museum of Public Transport of Wallonia – The Visit

Liege is located in the French-speaking part of Belgium. Most signs and information in the museum are in French only, there is limited documentation in Dutch as well. The museum is featuring a total of 2,000 objects. Fifty of them are vehicles displayed in the large exhibition hall. Even though the museum majorly illustrates the history and development of transport in the region (starting with horse-driven cars, for example), there are also some exhibits from other parts of the country and even from Aachen in Germany. The information is detailed and you also understand the technical details of the carriages, even if you don’t speak the language.

The range of items is rather extensive. What I really liked that the museum allows to step inside the cars and buses. It is really fun to explore the items. There are also technical items in display, A special exhibit during my visit was a mock-up of the new metro of the city, which was very interesting. The transportation is expected to open in 2025. The same, rather rear, part of the museum also features a couple of interactive exhibits, which are more fun for younger visitors.

The museum also comes with class rooms and a documentation center. I really liked the staff at the Museum of Public Transport of Wallonia, which was really helpful and friendly.

 

Museum of Public Transport of Wallonia – My View

The museum is really a gem. Unfortunately, there are the weird opening times, in winter as well as on the weekends. You get around without speaking French or Dutch, the staff and location is nice and a great value for money. I really liked it.
