  • Small, very charming and interesting place
  • Picturesque small town

A railroad museum with good reviews, even though I could hardly find any good information on the internet? The Southern Tennessee city of Lynnville and its Railroad Museum definitely drew my attention when I planned my Six US States and Nashville trip in summer 2025. On the fourth day of my road trip, I finally went for the detour – and share my thoughts and impressions with you and do a – rather unique – mixture of a museum review and a Pictured Story.

Lynnville Railroad Museum – Location & Admission

Lynnville is a some 300 inhabitant town in Southern Tennessee. It is located some 18 miles / 20 minutes away from the I-65 Interstate from Nashville to Athens in Georgia. You need to have a car to get there. There is sufficient free parking in the city center.

The Lynnville Railroad Museum is a free entry location. It is opening daily from 9:00 to 16:00 hrs. Some services in Lynnville were closed during my visit. You might have that in mind and check out the individual opening times when you visit the city.

Lynnville Railroad Museum – The Visit

You can split visiting the Lynnville Railroad Museum into two parts. First of all, there is the station building, which is hosting a general exhibition of the Lynnville railroad history. The exhibition is obviously compact, but very well done, including a small model train and quite a lot of items. Thereby, the museum still spreads the spirit of the railroad operation days in town (the tracks are still used, but there are no trains stopping in Lynnville). I really liked strolling through the building and exploring things. Obviously, the visiting time there is not that long, approximately 15 minutes, if you want to dig a bit deeper into the topic.

I was absolutely surprised about the train exhibit, which took me significantly more time. The museum in that part is much more than just exploring the historic engine and cars. The cars feature an exhibition about the railroad history of the region. I was especially interested in the history of Franklin C. Mars’ Milky Way Farm. Yeah, the names Mars and Milky Way in there are no coincidence – the guy really invented the world famous chocolate bar. I later also visited the farm, which is some ten minutes South of Lynnville. There are impressions in my trip report episode. This was only one driver why the museum exceeded my expectations.

Views of Lynnville (TN)

Visiting the Lynnville Railroad Museum without having a short walk through Lynnville TN itself would be a shame. It is a lovely, picturesque place. There are some interesting craft services, which were – as I said above – unfortunately closed during my visit. Lynnville has a traditional, nostalgic aura. One of the most famous places is a family / burger restaurant, which feels to be very charismatic (it was just too early for me to check it out in fact). Here are some impressions in Pictured Story format.

Lynnville / Lynnville Railroad Museum – Services

Apart from the restaurants and the shops, there is also a toilet in historic downtown. This is especially helpful, as the museum itself does not drive a sanitary facility.

Lynnville Railroad Museum – My View

I am really glad that I found this tiny gem on my road trip. The Lynnville Railroad Museum is small, but a lovely beauty. The small town is definitely worth the detour. I recommend adding the Milky Way Farm to your trip, so that you complete that episode of nutrition history on your visit.
