  • Lovely vocals

Flyctory.com Cons

  • Just seven tracks

I don’t only love the Faroe Islands as my favorite place to hang out and relax, I also try to get deeper into their music. There is an incredibly wide music scene out there. After I introduced you to Lyon Hansen’s album Skull-Sized Kingdom in March 2025, this 2nd May 2025 release goes into a very different direction. Ester Skala is doing sweet pink pop, as she calls it. Including all the tracks she already published, Skala released the seven track album Unicorn on that day.

Ester Skala – About The Artist

Ester Skala is a Faroese pop artist. She already started writing songs in early teenage years. In 2021, she released her debut single Unicorn, the title track of her release. In 2024, she represented the Faroe Islands at the Pan-ArcticVision Song Contest, some sort of Eurovision Song Contest for very Northern countries. The short album is her first physical release.

Ester Skala – Unicorn – Track by Track

The seven track album lasts 24 minutes

1. Blue Eyes

The opener Blue Eyes is one of two tracks which have not yet been released on this album. The sound of Ester Skala is dreaming, but also has a nice flow and a very modern touch. Her voice is an absolute beauty. Overall, Blue Eyes feels very personal, but also quite calm.

2. Spotlight

Spotlight has a similar style than the opener. However, the clicking rhythm and the present synth melodic lead to more catching listen. The key reason why the second song is one of the most striking ones on Unicorn is the lovely vocal performance by Skala.

3. Become

Compared to the other songs being available on Spotify beforehand, Become has a rather limited number of streams. Nonetheless, I like the pop-ish melody of the touch of melancholy in this song. It feels a bit like traveling back in time, but on the other hand also has a nice modern touch.

4. Mellow Cat

Oh Mellow Cat, I am dying for your beauty
Mellow Cat, Come back and hunt me
Mellow Cat, Why in such a hurry
Mellow Cat, I said come back and hunt mii-iiiauw
You belong to mii-iiiauw

The lyrics of the fourth song made me smile. I simply love running into new ideas, new metaphors. However, the song does not only stay in mind due to its storytelling, the melody also has a beautifully gently touch.

5. Ring On It

The synth part in Ring On It is rather present and almost takes over the entire rhythmic role at the song, especially at the beginning. Breaks in the plot of the track ensure that the song does stay interesting – even though the 2:52 minute one is already the shortest on Unicorn.

6. Friends

With Friends, Ester Skala presents a piano ballad rather at the end of her album. I really love this intimate and touching song. Her sweet pink pop also allows for moments like these – and they spread a lot of beauty.

7. Unicorn

The title track closes the album. With some 36k streams, it has been comparably popular for a Faroese song. The song feels very modern and has a lovely groove. The chorus is not that complex, but it definitely makes you smile and enjoy.

For I am a unicorn and I like that colour of purple
I live in Sci-fi and I don’t know how
I’ve reached the other side and the pink blue sky elates me
to the rainbow, my highlight starts to glow now
I am the rainbow and don’t you dare to think
I can’t move…

Ester Skala – Unicorn – My View

Unicorn is modern, it is nostalgic, it makes you want to dance and it is relaxing. I really like Ester Skala and her first compilation of sweet pink pop songs. The variety offered by the Faroese music scene is amazing – here is a really nice one from the pop music section.

Favorite Song: Unicorn
