When I was in Newport, Rhode Island, in summer 2024, I unfortunately did not have too much time to visit some of the local attractions. My coverage of the International Tennis Hall of Fame Open 2024 and the Induction to the International Tennis Hall of Fame simply had higher priority. One of the few places I visited was the Newport Car Museum, which came with excellent reviews. Here are my thoughts about the museum.

Newport Car Museum – Location & Admission

The Newport Car Museum is located North of Newport and South of the city of Melville, right at the RI-114. Thus, it is geographically located in the city of Portsmouth in Rhode Island. It is located in a major commercial building. You can go there by public transport, bus 60 is taking you to W Main opposite Raytheon Entrance / W Main after Raytheon Entrance. However, I would rather recommend to go there by car. There is sufficient free parking right at the museum.

The technical museum is opening daily from 10:00 to 17:00. Adult admission is 20 USD.

Newport Car Museum – The Visit

The Newport Car Museum is a private collection, which has opened in 2017 and covers more than 100 cars. They are arranged in a total of seven different galleries, all exhibits are documented. Thus, you should at least plan with a visiting time of 90 minutes. Car fans will definitely spend more time in there. Of course, you cannot sit inside the cars, but many had open windows so that there was plenty of opportunity to explore the cars.

The first of the galleries I visited was World Cars, which majorly features European luxury brands, from Lamborghini to Mercedes Benz and from Jaguar to BMW. I really liked the exhibition and the style of the museum, even though the exhibits were of course rather close to places I visited in Germany and around. The Fin Cars gallery focuses on the US-American style of the 1950’s, coming with typical North American cars and brands like Buick or Cadillac.

Seven Car Galleries

Similar to the Fin Cars, I loved strolling through the American Muscle gallery. The focus in here are the iconic cars of the 1960’s, like a Camaro or a Mustang. Of course, this is a golden age of North American mobiles. Like in all other galleries, the status and the maintenance of the cars felt excellent. The remaining galleries focus on certain car brands. Mopars is about high-power Chrysler vehicles, for example. The Newport Car Museum also runs a dedicated section on Porsche cars. The owner of the museum has some German roots, so that this part felt rather natural. Of course, it cannot cope with the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, but it is a really nice display of the German sports car manufacturer.

The museum is also driving a special collection of Chevrolet’s most iconic car series, the Corvette. My favorite, though, was the amazing and rich Ford/Shelby collection in the rear of the exhibition hall, which also came with a large number of cars in display.

Furniture / Design Exhibition

Apart from vehicles, Newport Car Museum is also featuring another very interesting set of exhibits. Spread all over the museum, there is furniture (majorly sofas) designed after globally famous designs. These exhibits come with some documentation and stories. I really appreciated this part of the Newport Car Museum as well, especially as I am typically not that exposed to furniture and design.

Newport Car Museum – Services

The museum also features a large souvenir store, which comes with a large range of items for sale. Like in the store, the staff in the museum was very friendly. I had a couple of really nice chats with the people there during my visit.

Newport Car Museum – My View

The Newport Car Museum comes with a lovely collection of cars. The staff is great, the gift shop is fun to visit. Furthermore, it comes with a very relaxed atmosphere and a great presentation. The collection of design furniture is a really nice add-on. Overall, I really loved my visit North of the beautiful beach city. Even if you are not that much into cars, I would definitely recommend visiting this place.
