TSV Bayer Leverkusen – TG Nürtingen 33-34 (17-18)

Just about a month after I saw the Werkselfen the last time against Rödertal, it was time again to head to Ostermann-Arena in Leverkusen. The 2nd Women Handball Bundesliga team of TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen hosted TG Nürtingen. After they tied at league leader HC Leipzig before, there was quite some home for additional points, fighting against being relegated again. However, Nürtingen as second placed team in the league definitely came from Southwest Germany to the Rheinland region as favorites. Here is my match report of the 29th March 2026 match in Leverkusen.

TSV Bayer Leverkusen – TG Nürtingen – Match Report

The match started with a lot of fast offensive plays, successful and unsuccessful ones. After the first minutes were close, Nürtingen managed to have some buffer on the home team. When Lisa Fuchs gave the guests a three goal lead in the 13th minute, she urged Leverkusen for the first time out of the match. After it looked like a very high scoring game initially, the attacks took more time and scoring slowed down. Nürtingen’s lead melted down bit by bit. Denise Moll tied the score (14-14) in the 25th minute. However, three goals in a row by the guests felt giving the favorite team a comfortable lead. With a buzzer beater, Mol at least closed up to a intermission score of 17-18, which still felt allowing an interesting second half.

Leverkusen in the Lead early in the Second Half

The hosts had the better start of the match. Two early goals gave them the first lead in the game (34th). However, the central Bayer defense felt too vulnerable and Nürtingen made use of it. There were multiple goals by the guests following quickly after a goal by the underdogs. While the match stayed tied initially, Nürtingen managed creating a three goal lead in the middle of the second half. The match felt already clear when Annika Distel scored in the 52nd minute. Her goal gave Nürtingen the first five score lead in the game (31-26). However, the Werkselfen did not stop fighting. Goal by goal, they closed up and also profited from a nervous match. With forty seconds left to play, Mia Cruzado brought back the score to a one goal lead. However, the guests played very disciplined and solely gave Leverkusen a four second ball possession at the end of the match, saving a 34-33 victory abroad.

TSV Bayer Leverkusen – TG Nürtingen – My View of the Match

Despite Leverkusen stays third last with this close loss, they will stay in the 2nd Bundesliga in the 2026-27 season. The simple reason is that there is just one team from the third division which will be potentially promoted, while this relegation spot is taken by HC Ludwigshafen from the 1st Bundesliga, who will loose their Bundesliga license entirely.

Even though this might feel a bit of weird, it is a good sign for Leverkusen. After their epic battle in Leipzig, they also proofed at home that they can even compete with the best teams of their division. Nürtingen had a bit of struggle in a match, in which the referees were too much in focus. Overall, it was an unexpectedly close and interesting battle between the two teams.
