In January 2026, I headed to Oslo to support the Faroe Islands at the Handball World Championships. As I had to work during daytime on some of the days, I needed a central hotel with good services and connections, especially those to Unity Arena. I finally opted for the Comfort Hotel Grand Central Oslo, driven by Strawberry, the Nordic Choice Hotels brand. Here is the review of my experience.

Comfort Hotel Grand Central – Location

The hotel is located right inside Oslo Central Station. It is the only hotel with that features, a few others have fully covered links, though. The station obviously offers a vast number of services, which are helpful to travelers. This also includes snack bars and grocery stores. The hotel is also just a couple of steps away from the shopping heart of Oslo. You can either take the entrance heading right into the picturesque Ostbanehallen or a Southbound door taking you outside directly.

The location of the hotel is one of its key features – and that obviously includes transport links. Regardless whether you take the the more expansive Flytoget express train, or the cheaper and just little slower regional train, its location offers a fully covered travel from your hotel room to Oslo Airport (OSL). There are connections all over the Nordics from Oslo Sentral, including trains to Gothenburg and Stockholm in Sweden, to Trondheim and the Bergensbanen, including the corresponding night services. However, there is also a very good network of regional and local trains. Right outside the hotel, there is also one of the tram and bus stops. There are several Central Station stops, depending on the line served. This may be a bit confusing at first. Overall though, the Comfort Hotel Grand Central has short distance to all of them.

Comfort Hotel Grand Central – Room

I had a five night stay at the hotel, from Friday to Wednesday in January 2026. The total price for the standard double room (in single occupancy) on a flexible rate was 8,472.90 NOK, roughly 750 EUR. The rates at the hotel generally include breakfast. The room was quite at the end of a long aisle, which was a bit of bothersome. It was not overwhelmingly large, but the size was just fine for my purpose, being able to work there are store my equipment. Despite being right at the train station, it was rather quiet – you did hear other hotel guests here and then. The room did not feature amenities like a fridge or a water kettle. The distribution of power sockets was reasonable. Overall, given the price and location – Oslo was flooded with Faroese handball fans at that time – I was quite happy with the comfort.

Compared to the room, the bathroom was rather on the spacious side. Especially the large shower felt very comfortable. I also had sufficient space for my toiletries and felt comfortable on the toilet. The Comfort Hotel provides amenities by dispensers. There is house keeping every fourth morning. I did refuse that as I had to work during the service times. I was very pleased with the state of the room. Cleanliness and maintenance felt very fine.

Comfort Hotel Grand Central – Breakfast

The hotel runs a restaurant, whose main seating area is inside Ostbanehallen. For breakfast, you can use the entire space of the restaurant, including some a bit more private areas. The buffet feels to be served right inside the restaurant’s kitchen. This may feel a bit of odd at first side, but finally works out very well. Especially compared to other Nordic places, the Comfort Hotel offers a good range of different items, the quality is nice as well. On the warm dish side, the selection is a bit of thin, but it all works out fine. In busier breakfast times, though, the rather narrow aisle through the breakfast buffet may be a bit of bothering.

Comfort Hotel Grand Central – Service

The staff was very friendly and helpful. I was offered an earlier check-in for a fee, but finally decided to refuse. Also when you had questions, they were very polite and provided good hospitality. The hotel offers free WiFi. In quite some occasions, even at late night hours, it did not have the necessary stability so that I had to switch to mobile network. Especially as Norway is not part of the European Union, this may be very bothering, depending on the contractual structure of your network provider.

Comfort Hotel Grand Central – My View

The Comfort Hotel Grand Central is an ideal option for a city trip to Oslo, especially if you also want to visit some places in the regional around the Norwegian capital. Being directly located within Main Station is a treat. You have to deal with the downsides, though, as well. The rooms are rather compact. I rather struggled with the WiFi issues they had. Nonetheless, I really liked it there.
