2025 – My Year in Travel

It is the third time I start my year-end posts with My Year in Travel. The post is rather about travel facts than about travel opinions, reviews and ratings. I share some statistics about the places I visited and new experiences in this post. Hope you like my post.

 

Countries I Traveled To

I did not change the structure of the post, compared to 2024. Thus, I start with the countries I have visited during 2025.

 

New Countries 2025

I typically try to go for a couple of new countries per year – but 2025 was a bit of lousy in that regard:

  • Türkiye (First Time outside airports)

Most Frequently Flown Airports in 2025:

Here are my most frequently used airports in 2025. Each take-off and landing counts separately.

By the way, the most-frequently flown non-European airports are Chicago (ORD) and Las Vegas (LAS) with four flight connections each.

 

Most Frequently Flown Airlines in 2025:

British Airways is still in the lead for 2025 – but due to the changes in their loyalty scheme, this will likely change significantly in 2026.

By distance, British Airways is in the lead as well, followed by KLM, American Airlines and Finnair.

 

Most Frequently Flown Plane Type in 2025:

I typically do not distinguish between different sub-series of the same plane type in my statistics, e.g. between a A340-400 and an A340-600. I split out the neo and MAX versions, though.

There are three airplanes, which I flew three times in 2025. Namely, these are the ones with the registrations D-AMWO, D-AWSI (both German Airways, Embraer 190), and PH-NXI (KLM Cityhopper, Embraer 195).

 

Rail Travel

Rail travel is an important part of my journeys. I absolutely enjoy being able to work or relax while in transit.

 

Rail Companies I Used in 2025

I had trips with the following rail companies.

The difference between rail companies and light rails or funiculars is sometimes hard to take. I tried to focus on longer distance rail situations.

 

Longest Rail Trips in 2025

Typically, I present in here the longest rail trips I took. However, this year, the longest runs were just domestic routes in Germany – I simply did not have any exciting night train adventures or similar. Will be back with those in 2026 very likely.

 

Hotels 2025

Overall, I spent 109 nights in hotels during 2025. Here are some more insights.

 

Most Popular Hotels 2025

Two stays on the Faroe Islands gave the lead to the Hilton Garden Inn Faroe Islands this year. I had nine nights at my favorite hotel of the archipelago.

Hotel Nights by Country 2025

In my 2024 post and in the 2023 post, Germany was my most popular country of travel. The USA has surpassed that position in 2025. After 12 nights in the United Arab Emirates and ten nights in France last year, these two countries don’t make it to the top of the list at all.

Munich lead this category in my 2024 post. This year, it has been passed by the Faroese capital Torshavn.

Almost exactly the same number of nights as in 2024 – Hilton is my favorite overnight provider. Likely, this won’t change too much in future years.

Car Rental by Provider

With seven rentals in total, Hertz stays my favorite rental car provider. The  company is not only the only provider I used more than once, but also on the top of my list in regards of rental days.
