Some 2,000 years ago, the Romans controlled a wider range of Europe. They even made it to (nowadays) Luxemborurg. One of the still existing witnesses of that presence are the remains of a Roman Villa, the Villa Romana, in (todays) Echternach. It has been turned into an open air museum with a small indoor museum part. Sometimes, the place is also just referred to as Roman Villa, by the way. The name in the local language is Réimervilla Echternach. I take you there on a visit.

Echternach Villa Romana – Location & Admission
The excavation site is located South of the town of Echternach, which offers all necessary services to visitors. Thus, the place is also close to the German cities Trier and Bitburg. The area is beautiful, as it is located close to a volcanic lake, which can also be used for bathing in summer. Due to that, there is a quite major public parking lot nearby, which may be crowded, especially on weekends. There is also a bus stop named Nonnemillen, connecting to Echternach rail station, but also the city of Luxembourg.
The Roman Villa or Villa Romana is only open in summer months. In 2025, this will be from 8th April to 28th September. It is closed on Mondays. All other days, it opens from 10:00 to noon and 13:00 to 17:00. As you should at least plan for a one hour visit, you should be there early in the morning or aim for the afternoon session. Admission is free.

Echternach Villa Romana – Outdoor Grounds
The size of the former Roman villa is impressing. It has been a U-shaped building with a lake in the middle. Signs in German and French give you a general introduction and guide you through the grounds. These also show illustrations how the place is assumed to have looked alike in the past. This leads to a very descriptive and interesting experience. In most of the cases, only the foundation of the villa is remaining, but there are some spots like some pillars. In some places, you can step down to ground level. Only a few parts of the ruins are blocked to visitors, so that you have a really good time at this site.

A really nice and well-maintained part of the site is the Roman Garden in one section of the area. There are typical plants and structures, which even give you a limited botanical garden feeling. Of course, this place is most interesting in summer and early fall, when the plants have grown.

Echternach Villa Romana – Museum
It is definitely also worth to have a look into the small museum. The place gives additional insights about the Roman life in Echternach and in general. Apart from a video and some models of buildings, there are also some statues and displays illustrating how a household at that time has been organized.

Echternach Villa Romana – Services
The museum reception also drives a small gift shop, which has some nice memorabilia. Especially on a sunny day, the cafe service is a quite nice feature, you can sit in the sun and enjoy the view of the grounds. Your kids might be entertained on the playground during that time.

Echternach Villa Romana – My View
The Villa Romana in Echternach is really worth a visit. The lunch break is a bit of bothering, but the excavation site is really nicely made up. If you are in the region, I definitely recommend a visit.
