Flyctory.com Pros

  • Good narratives and songwriting
  • Versatile, very entertaining album
  • A touch of Lordi <3

In its 3rd October 2025 edition, the metal project Gunz lead my Songs of the Week. Three weeks later, the band shared a sophomore single. Now, it is time having a full listen to the sound of the Faroese band. On 28th November 2025, the band takes us on a ride with the Psycho Train. It is the title of their debut album.

Gunz – About The Artists

Gunz is the solo project of Gunnar Gunz Helmer Thomsen. He is very well known in the music scene as the lead bassist of Tyr, the most successful metal export from Faroe Islands. Another key person behind Gunz is Hans Hedinsson Hammer, who is in the credits as the co-author, part of the production as well as vocalist, guitarist and synth musician. Her also supported other local projects like Asyllex. Other musicians on the album are Tadeusz Rieckmann (drums) and Heri Joensen (guitars).

Gunz – Psycho Train – Track by Track

The ten song album lasts 40 minute.

1. Psycho Train

The album starts with the title track. The kid, who is telling that your train is ready for departure in a typical announcement style reminds me of the SCG narrative parts of Lordi albums. And the blasting rock energy somehow makes me thing about my favorite monsters. Long story short: this haunted train is right in my musical comfort zone – and simply a lot of fun!

2. The Fractured View

If you regularly read my Songs of the Week, you won’t expect too many negative words about this song. As I wrote in the introduction, it lead my new song release posting and I still love the cool metal style with some scary and darker moments, which nicely contrasts with the very melodic signature of the song.

3. Doll House

Next, the Faroese artist takes you to the Doll House. I have to smile when you listen to the falling keyboard line at the beginning of the song – the album reminds me so much of my Finnish hard rock favorites. However, Psycho Train is not a cheap bootleg of Mr Lordi and his monster friends. The songs have a very individual character. I love the vocal variety by Gunnar Helmer Thomsen, which adds so much dark and cool atmosphere to the narrative and dramatic style of the track.

4. Carnival of Chaos

The next listen on Psycho Train is Carnival of Chaos. It starts with a fast pace in the intro, but then slows down slightly. The song nicely works with guitar and synth elements. Finally, this one one of the most interesting sounds of the whole album.

5. Train Wreck

The second single release of the album is Train Wreck. The song is a rather straight metal song with a good speed. I especially like the melodic elements towards the end of the track.

6. Cursed

The second half of this very special train ride starts with Cursed. This one rather heads again to a rather dramatic narration. The leverage between key and string instruments works really nicely. Cursed is not the best song of the album, but a really good listen.

7. All About Me

The hymnic, melodic All About Me is one of the finest parts of the album. It simply got something for any metal listener. It is a good sing along, there are melodic as well as rather brutal parts. The drums are hammering at fast pace. The song catches you and sucks you in with its great atmosphere.

8. Dead Arise

As the eighth track of his debut album, Gunz is presenting Dead Arise. The repetitive Marching into War at the beginning of the song darkens the mood of the song. If you are reflecting not too intensively about the story of the song, this one could lead to a lot of fun in case Gunz is stepping on stage one day. A really good one!

9. Hollow Eyes

Over five minutes of duration – Hollow Eyes pleases the demand (or desire) for a really caching epic track on the album. The instrumental intro takes about 80 seconds, before a rather clear and traditional metal style is defining the listen. The song is rather straight, but it does have some nice atmospheric twists in stock. Nice one!

10. Road

This frightening train ride finally ends on the Road. Gunz goes for a fast ride at the very end of his solo debut. The album is closing with one of its most energetic songs. Thus. the chucker-out makes you leave the Psycho Train with a big smile in your face.

Gunz – Psycho Train – Track by Track

Gunz is, of course, a very experienced person in the international music and metal scene. Thus, it is not too surprising that the debut album of his solo project is striking. I love the versatile style, the good speed and the dramatic style of his songs. Very nicely done.

Favorite Song: All About Me
