Some music acts defined the style and sound of their genres. X Marks the Pedwalk. On 27th November 2025, they released a new album. Here is my review of Insomnia.

X Marks The Pedwalk – About The Artists

X Marks The Pedwalk is a German electronic music band and project, which has been founded in 1987. The lead of the band is SevrenNi-Arb, whose civil name is Andre Schmechta. He and his label meshwork music is nowadays based in Münster. During the history of the band, they worked as a duet. The band had its first gig in 1989 an released their debut album Freaks n 1992. The band was very active in the 1990’s. However, there was no album release between 1996 and 2010. Since then, there are regular album releases, the last one being Superstition (2023). Insomnia is X Marks The Pedwalk’s thirteenth studio record release.

X Marks The Pedwalk – Insomnia – Track by Track

The ten song album lasts 42 minutes

1. A Heart In The Dark

Already the first moments of Insomnia reflect the typical sound of X Marks The Pedwalk. There are elements of synth pop and dark wave, some industrial influences. The voice is pitched to high vocals, the melody below is slow, but intense. A Heart In The Dark spreads some melancholic feelings – just as you would expect by the title.

2. Bury ME

Bury ME has been shared on YouTube four weeks before album release – I could not find it on Spotify, though. This is very similar to the opener, which had a pre-release on some platforms as well. The dark sound continues in here. In the second track, though, the atmosphere feels more fierce and intense. The beat is hard and powerful and drives this one.

3. Another Love

The third Insomnia song is Another Love. The keyboard melodies play a stronger role in here again, which overall leads to an easier to digest sound. Even though electronic music is not my favorite genre, I have to give in that Sevren No-Arb and his project does have a nice touch. It’s fun listening to the songs so far.

4. One Minute

The title One Minute definitely does not relate to the duration of this song. The almost five minute track is the longest on the album. X Marks The Pedwalk thereby starts very pop-ish. Even though you feel the musical foundation of the project, the song would definitely work on more mainstream-alike dancefloors as well.

5. Lines

At Lines, the drum part is not as thumbing as in the song before. This leads to a stronger focus on the synth melodies and the fine vocals. he fifth track of Insomnia is a nice song, but lacks a bit of character in my point of view.

6. Light Your Mind

Released in June 2025 already, Light Your Mind was the first track released from X Marks The Pedwalk’s new album. The rhythm does dominate the song – but it also comes with a nice melody. Thus you significantly feel the ease of a pop song during the listen as well.

7. Midnight Island

X Marks The Pedwalk’s trip to the Midnight Island starts slowly. It is a rather fine song, which even feels a bit of fragile after listening to the very present Light Your Mind. The German project shows a nice range of songs, the altering style keeps Insomnia entertaining.

8. Goodbye

With two more songs following thereafter, it is already time for a Goodbye. Sevren Ni-Arb experiments with a wider range of sounds here. The chorus is the core of the song in here, definitely, and leads to a catching listen.

9. Feel It Right

The sound of Feel It Right reminds me of some well-known Erasure tracks. In line with that, I simply feel comfortable with it from the very beginning. A lovely song with a great melody line.

10. Automatic Hero

Last, but not least, there is the Automatic Hero. The song underlines the industrial side of music by X Marks the Pedwalk. The song majorly strikes with cool synth sounds and a driving beat. On top of that, its increasing intensity turns it into an enjoyable listen.

X Marks The Pedwalk – Insomnia – Spotify

The album is so far solely available on the project’s Bandcamp page.

X Marks The Pedwalk – Insomnia – My View

Synth pop and electronic music might not be the genres I listen to most frequently, but this German project definitely gave me quite a bunch of fun. X Marks The Pedwalk manages to present interesting, variable and sometimes also surprising memories. The sound of Insomnia is not monotonous at all, so that I listened to it with a smile.

Favorite Song: Another Love
