Faroe Islands U21 – France U21 0-6 (0-3)

The last sports event on my October 2025 trip to the Faroe Islands was a soccer qualification match to the Under 21 European Championship in Albania and Serbia in 2027. The Under 21 teams of the Faroe Islands and France clashed at vid Djumpumyru in Klasksvik. I had visited the stadium on my trip before, for a match of the Under 21 teams of the locals, KI Klaksvik, facing AB. Here is my match report.

Faroe Islands U21 – France U21 – Match Report

Compared to the Under 21 League match I visited in Klaksvik four days before, the weather felt absolutely friendy. It was slightly warmer, less rain and even the gusty winds which often pass through the Klaksvik valley felt more gentle this time. This made it definitely easier for the French team to get into their game – and the guests took control from the very first second. The Faroe Islands team felt to be quite solid in defense in the first minutes, but the favorites managed to convert superiority into opportunities soon. In the 13th minute, Wilson Odobert scored the first goal of the day, being not covered in a good position in the slot.

The goal felt to even increase the pressure caused by the French team. It partially rather felt like an intense training session for the guests, who were impressingly supported by supporters from a French navy ship, which happened to be at Torshavn Harbor. Dayann Mathalie raised the score to 2-0 in the 22nd minute. The Faroese players tried to launch scattered attacks and one of their best ones could have lead to an interesting twist. After a right wing attack, a French defender tripped a Faroese forward in the penalty area. However, the Faroese captain Aki Samuelsen failed to convert the penalty shot in the 31st minute. Nonetheless, the situation felt to give the host team some faith and hope, so that they acted more optimistically in offense. However, in the 38th minute, that made them run into a French fast attack, which could only be stopped by the foul. Mathys Tel took the ball to peform the penalty shot in the 38th minute – and he was more successful than his Faroese peer seven minutes before. Thus, the score after 45 minute was 0-3.

France stays too strong for the Faroe Islands

The second period started with two early goals for Gerald Baticle’s team. After a left wing attack, Jean-Matteo Bahoya scored in the 51st minute. Methalie added his second goal of the game with a wise flat shot from a slightly left-wing position in the penalty area seven minutes later. The French soldiers already sang their national anthem in Klaksvik and Ayyoub Bouaddi made them sing even louder in the 67th minute. The French attacker was in a too good central position and even had the time to easily slide the home his shot for the sixth goal overall.

The teams stayed agile, the Faroese young men even had some nice offensive tries in the remaining part of the match. Overall, though, you felt that both teams also now started to save some energy for the tasks which are ahead of them. The more, it felt unnecessary that at the end of a very fair and respectful match, there were some slight unsportsmanlike actions, including a minor scuffle after the final whistle.

Faroe Islands U21 – France U21 – My View of the Match

Only three arrondissements of Paris, Elysee, Luxembourg and Palais-Bourbon have less inhabitants than the Faroe Islands in total. There are 100 cities in France, which are larger than the independent territory. If you judge the match on that matrix, you see how outstanding the performance of the hosts is – even though it was, of course, a very one sided match. I was a bit of sad that an overall very fair match had a bit of a nervous ending. In contrast to Montenegro in the Men’s European Qualifiers the day before, France was well-prepared to the conditions (which are significantly more “Faroese” than at Torsvollur, well-coached and cruised to an absolutely safe and highly deserved victory.
