  • Nice, personal, atmospheric songs
  • Excellent storytelling

Recently, the songwriter Christo Graham played shows in Germany at the Reeperbahn Festival in Hamburg. On 4th October 2024, he is releasing a new album. Here is my review of Songs For Horses.

Christo Graham – About The Artist

Christo Graham is a Canadian musician, actor, and graphic designer. He is based in Lansdowne, Ontario, East of Kingston. Music For Horses is already his seventh album. However, some of his works can only be found on his Bandcamp account. You likely find his two most recent, non-Christmas related albums, Turnin’ (2020) and Graham’s General Store (2021). Apart from his solo works, he is also writing music for other genres. For example, he wrote the rock opera Clown Riot, alongside Tyrone Savage and Ginar Ogbit.

Christo Graham – Music For Horses – Track by Track

The twelve track album lasts 43 minutes.

1. Hunker Down

Christo Graham starts his Music For Horses with Hunker Down. The song is a slow and thoughtful folk music track. It is telling its story in an unagitated, clear way so that it is really enjoyable listening to the tunes.

2. Pancakes and Eggs

The second song is the single release Pancakes and Eggs. The song rather reminds me of earlier works by The Beatles. Even though a bit of in the background, the piano is driving the song. The storytelling in here is especially beautiful in my point of view.

3. Hand of God

The third track Hand of God brings Music For Horses back to a folk music touch. Even more than the first two songs, this one is concentrating on Christo Graham’s voice and thus on the lyrics. Another really beautiful thing about this listen is the lovely flow of the song.

4. Lonely Enough

Country music fans will enjoy the vibes of Lonely Enough. The song definitely has a nice touch of that genre and even comes with some steel guitar in the background. If you’re lonely enough, that’s when the lights starts to shine – you simply have to enjoy the sense of humor in this track.

5. Hilltop Coffee Stop

In the fifth track, Christo Graham is taking us to the Hilltop Coffee Stop. Again, it is a song you simply have to listen to and enjoy, how the artist is describing the scenes, which are happening in there. Hilarious! The vocals in the background of the chorus even turn this one somehow into a family story.

6. Circle of Stone

Slow harmonica tunes and a gently strummed guitar are introducing you to the next one, Circle of Stone. There is plenty of time to play it gently – the song is over six minutes overall. It turns into a beautiful and deep self-reflection. This leads to an even more personal touch.

7. If I Don’t Leave Now

The next (and last) feature single on the album, If I Don’t Leave Now, is a folk song with a slight country music touch. If I don’t leave now I probably never will describes the struggles of going for a new chapter in one’s life. The song starts rather quiet, but then becomes more present, mainly due to the gentle drumming in the background.

8. In The Shadow of Man

The eighth song of Music For Horses is In The Shadow of Man.The song comes with a dreamful atmosphere, even though the song tells a rather deep story again.

9. Unwanted

Christo Graham feels Unwanted in this song. And indeed, the song comes with a lamenting and melancholic feeling. With less than three minutes, it is rather short, but definitely claims its space in this set of tracks.

10. Hunger Stone

Songs for Horses continues with Hunger Stone. The tenth track comes with a rather joyful melody, which feels rather pop-ish. However, there are also quite surprising elements, like the kettledrum-alike stomping rhythm in the background. Nonetheless, I would not put this one on the top of my.

11. Tears in My Coffee

Coffee plays a role in multiple songs. This one, Tears in My Coffee, shares another very personal story. Again Graham manages to

12. Hippie Cahier

The 2024 album closes with some country-folk tunes. The very yound sounding background singers work out very well, together with the acoustic guitar. A nice, rather slow finale.

Christo Graham – Music For Horses – My View

I really enjoyed listening to Christo Graham and his Music For Horses songs. They are very personal and relatable and by that. Graham is an excellent storyteller as well. Maybe not the kind of music which hits high in the mainstream charts – but that does tell anything about the beauty of these songs.
