A Hilton Hotel just an hour away from my home coming with a special kind of architecture and competitive prices? It is really remarkable that it took me two years after its opening until I finally had a night at the DoubleTree by Hilton Sittard in January 2024. The city in the Dutch province of Limburg is actually quite interesting geographically. Located in the narrowest part of continental Netherlands, you just have a few kilometers until crossing the Belgian border in the West or the German one in the East of the city. Here is my review of the hotel.
DoubleTree Sittard – Location & Traffic
The Hilton group hotel is located in the heart of the picturesque city of Sittard. Unfortunately, some heavy rain prevented me from covering some more views of the city. The rear of the hotel is practically adjacent to the pedestrian zone of town. A supermarket is in a small shopping mall very close to the hotel. As said, Sittard is also a nice location for some excursions, including Maastricht, West Belgium or Roermond.
If you come by car, the hotel is having a private parking spot at a rate of 12.50 EUR. The parking space might be too limited at crowded dates, though. The shopping mall next to it has a parking garage as well – I am not sure about their rates. If you arrive by rail, the hotel is also a nice choice, the walking distance from Sittard station is just some 10 minutes. The hotel is located rather in the middle of two bus stops, Hermans Theater and Stadhuis, which are both served by numerous bus lines.
DoubleTree Sittard – Atmosphere
The hotel is located in the former Bisschoppelijk College Sittard. The building has originally been a catholic elementary school, which finally moved to another location in 1988. At that time, some extensions of the building have been removed, before plans came up to turn it into a hotel in the late 2010’s. This leads to a very special atmosphere in the hotel, inside and outside.Sometimes, this also leads to some downsides like steps in the middle of aisles, but overall, the architecture is really nice and the hotel is nicely put into the 1908 built building.
DoubleTree Sittard – The Room
My stay was from Thursday to Friday in late January 2024. I booked the standard room category called Queen Duplex Room, at a non-refundable rate of 72.18 EUR including tax. The reception stated that I got an upgrade to a nice room. Indeed, this room was really huge. With the limited furniture, it even felt a bit of empty and had a slight echo. I liked the mixture of modern and classic design. Needless to say that you had sufficient space for your luggage. The work desk felt a bit of basic and just had one power outlet, but I still had sufficient comfort to work until check-out time (11:00).
Similar to the room itself, the bathroom felt huge. Especially the shower came with a massive size. The amenities provided in dispensers were the typical Hilton ones. The room was spotlessly clean.
DoubleTree Sittard – Breakfast
While I overall felt really welcome at the hotel (see below), breakfast lacked a bit of hospitality. The selection of items was absolutely fine, the presentation was not always ideal. For example, as the warm dishes were not covered, they felt rather dry (may I say: crispy?) on top. The staff did not feel being too present as well. Bad luck, as the scenery of the breakfast room, which is also used as a restaurant for dining, is really nice and is a good fit to the style of the hotel in general.
A really nice place to hang out in the evening is the beautiful hotel bar of the DoubleTree by Hilton Sittard.
DoubleTree Sittard – Service
Not only due to the signature cookie, the reception was very friendly and welcoming at check-in. Overall, I really loved their hospitality, even though they were slightly less warm at heart when I asked for direction in city center. WiFi in the room worked absolutely fine, which is likely some sort of a technical challenge in a rather old building like that one. The DoubleTree by Hilton Sittard also features a nice gym area.
DoubleTree Sittard – My View
Staying at the DoubleTree by Hilton Sittard is already memorable due to the very unique architecture of the building. I really wonder why they did not turn it into a Curio Collection one. There were some service issues, especially around breakfast, but overall, I had a really good stay for a nice price. Thus, I definitely recommend it.
