Hall of Fame Open 2024 – MD R1: R.C. Bollipalli / N. Kaliyanda Poonacha (IND) – L. Saville / A. Vukic (AUS) 1-6 4-6

Around 100 degrees Fahrenheid and high humidity – the Indian team Rithvik Choudary Bollipalli and Niki Kaliyanda Poonacha could not get more home-alike weather conditions for their first appearance in 2024 in Newport. At the Infosys Hall of Fame Open, the eighth-seeded faced the Australian team Luke Saville and Aleksandar Vukic. Here is my match report.

Infosys Hall of Fame Open – Bollipalli / Kaliyanda Poonacha – Saville / Vukic – Match Report

The first set can be summed up very quickly: the Indian pairing disappointed, while Saville and Vukic had a very solid and straight cruise first set. They broke Kaliyanda Poonacha’s serve twice, in the second and sixth game, which was the foundation to an easy first set for the pairing from Down Under. Just in the very last game (no-ad rule), the eighth-seeded pairing forced the leaders to a deuce situation and thus to a break point. But somehow, it suited the match so far that Saville and Vukic could stand that challenge. Just after 21 minutes, the first set was done with a 6-1 scoreline for the nominal underdogs.

The Indian nightmare felt to continue. Bollipalli went for the serve in the first game of the second set. He faced two break points, but could survive this situation. Overall, the match was closer now. However, the fact that the Asians faced six break points in the second set underlines that there was still too much struggle in this match from their side. Saville and Vukic were less dominant, but played solid enough. Speaking of break points, there was not a single one for Bollipalli and Kaliyanda Poonacha, not even in a deuce situation. While they could at least stand the challenges of the match until the eighth game, Bollipalli struggled in the ninth one at serve again. A double fault at 15-30 lea to three break points for his opponents. While the first two ones were saved, the Australian energy was too strong at deuce. After another 35 minutes, the match was decided in favor of unseeded Saville and Vukic.
