  • Powerful rock songs
  • Very fluent, versatile listen
  • Good vocals and instruments

Today night, I am heading to the EHF Handball European Championships in Oslo. What would thus be a better choice for an album review than featuring a band from the Norwegian capital. Gluecifer release their sixth studio album Same Drug New High on 16th January 2025. It is their first record since 21 years.

Gluecifer – About The Artists

Gluecifer name themselves the Kings of Rock. The rock band has been formed in Oslo, Norway, in 1994. They split up in 2005, but reunited in 2017. Two founding members, Frithjof Biff Malibu Jacobsen (vocals) and Arne Captain Poon Skagen (guitar) are still active founding members. Nowadays, the quintet also includes Peter Larsson (bass), Rolf Yngve Radio Useless Uggen (guitar) and Danny Young (drums). Despite they are one of the most successful rock bands in Norway, they just released five albums so far. Their debut was Ridin’ The Tiger (1997). Before their break-up, they released Automatic Thrill in 2004. Two albums, Basement Apes (2002) and Automatic Thrill, peaked second in the domestic album charts.

Gluecifer – Same Drug New High – Track by Track

The eleven song album lasts 39 minutes.

1. The Idiot

The Idiot has been the first song Gluecifer released as an album teaser. Despite just being 2:41 minutes long, the song immediately leaves a mark at the listener. Raw guitar power and punching drums drive this fast track at the beginning of their comeback album. Gluecifer makes sure that you have a good feeling while listening to this record from the very beginning.

2. Same Drug New High

The next song is already the title track. The song comes with a lot of rock power, the chorus also has a nice melodic touch. A bit of hard rock, some alternative elements and a cool guitar solo with quite some distortion – the Norwegians have quite a lot in stock during these three minutes.

3. Armadas

If you want some more quiet moments, you should definitely skip the first three songs of the album. These guys had to wait 21 years to share a set of new songs. Feels like there is a lot of built-up rock energy at Gluecifer. In regards of speed and roughness, Armadas reminds of the opener track. A fun listen for rock and hard rock lovers.

4. I´m Ready

With I’m Ready, the band from Oslo finishes the block of already released songs. Indeed, this song is reducing the rock energy slightly. The fourth track again presents rough riffs with a touch of alternative rock. Again, the song feels compact and on point, the bridge strikes with some surprising twists. I like it.

5. The Score

Six songs, all unreleased, are still remaining. The Score is the first of those – and with 4:20 minutes also the longest track of the album. The song feels like the perfect sound track for a road trip – at least if you are speeding a bit. The Scandinavians simply add too much rock flavor to have a gentle ride.

6. Pharmacity

Pharmacity is just a bit shorter than the predecessor. Even though this leads to a less compact and crisp listen, it also adds space for Gluecifer to develop a good plot. These longer tracks are definitely not boring – and have a lot in stock for guitar lovers.

7. 1996

The seventh track is taking you back to the mid-1990’s, when the Norwegian band started to develop and grow. The 2:56 minute song has a lot of rock’n’roll attitude and energy. It’s one of the faster songs of the album.

8. Made in the Morning

Made in the Morning feels like the perfect concert track. There is a significant flavor of stadium rock in the air while listening to this. And the Norwegians give you some opportunity to sing along with Biff Malibu. I am sure that this one is a lot of fun when the band is on stage.

9. Mind Control

Mind Control increases the speed again. The song also has a slightly darker touch, especially caused by the monotonous vocals in the stanzas. Despite the song is less than four minutes, it spreads a majestic and epic touch. I really like it.

10. Another Night, Another City

Already the introducing riffs tell you: this song is having a stronger melodic element. Another Night, Another City has the power and the straight-forward style of a punk rock track, which makes it very enjoyable.

11. On the Wire

Are we there already? The final song of Same Drug New High is On the Wire. The song is one of the slower, darker tracks of the album. I like the dramaturgy of it. Not a typical chucker-out track, but a very solid one at end of the record.

Gluecifer – Same Drug New High – My View

Welcome back, Gluecifer! Great to have you back in the record stores and playlists two decades therafter. The Norwegians still rock hard, but also present a smart and ride range of songs. I really like their comeback album.
