The Swiss Floorball Superfinals 2024 in Fribourg gave me a bit of a travel headache. I would have made it to the city in the French-speaking part of the country in the early morning. However, this would have had required a morning train ride from Cologne at about 4:00.. Vice versa, the last train I could have caught back home would have been the NightJet night train, which is notoriously sold out in the classes I want to travel in. Long story short: I needed to have stops somewhere on the way. I finally opted for the Mövenpick Hotel Basel, which is nicely located in walking distance to Basel SBB / Swiss Rail Station. Here is the review of my stay.

Mövenpick Hotel Basel – Location

The Mövenpick is located a few steps away from the main entrance of Basel SBB Station. You just have to cross the tram stops and pass a major street, before you arrive at the hotel doors. The area features several other hotels and restaurants. There are also numerous stores in the station, which typically have rather long opening times, including Sunday opening. Especially the snack store and the supermarket provided by Migros and the smaller coop supermarket are very handy for travelers. There is even an electronics store on the opposite side of the train station.

Transport connection from the hotel is excellent. The train station offers frequent connections throughout Switzerland as well as to Italy, Germany and France. The tram lines bring you to all key destinations of city center. There is also a bus (line 50), which is running to Basel / Mulhouse Airport (BSL).

Mövenpick Hotel Basel – Room

I booked a standard room in the Mövenpick Hotel, which belong to the Accor / ALL Group. My stay was in April 2024, Saturday to Monday. The price for two nights, excluding breakfast, was 274 CHF. As an Accor ALL Gold member, I received a complimentary upgrade and finally had a room on the 16th floor. It came with a lovely size. The work desk, which also had a European-style power outlet on top of the Swiss one, also had a really nice size. There was also a fridge, which I could stock up at the nearby supermarket.

The shower bathroom is spacious and nicely designed as well. The toilet is in a separate room in the bathroom. Unfortunately, the drain of the shower did not work well, which even flooded the hallway (I did not see it early enough as I obviously shower without glasses. This should have been recognized by the housekeeping, which apart from that did a very good job. The view from the hotel room was really lovely, you had a great view over the city.

Mövenpick Hotel Basel – Breakfast

As I knew I would not make it for breakfast after the second night, I just paid for breakfast on Sunday morning. The fee for the buffet was 38 CHF. The selection was fine, I loved the quality of the items offered. You could order egg dishes and similar items from the menu for free. Some fancy options like Eggs Benedict are available at an extra fee (10 CHF). I really loved the buffet and had a good start into my trip to BCF-Arena in Fribourg.

Mövenpick Hotel Basel – Service

The staff was very welcoming and friendly. As a visitor in Basel, you also get free public transport within the city (which does require downloading an app, though). On that stay, I could not make use of the offer, but I feel it is a really nice way of marketing the city. WiFi in the hotel worked very well, which was especially convenient in regards of working on the sportd pictures. The hotel does drive a gym with a sauna/spa area. Unfortunately, I did not manage to have a look into it.

Mövenpick Hotel Basel – My View

I absolutely enjoyed my stay at the Mövenpick Hotel Basel. The location is excellent for travelers, the service is nice. The price is, of course, way higher than if you chose a hotel on the German or French towns close to Basel, but in Swiss relations, prices are absolutely fine as well. I would definitely go for this hotel close to the rail station again on a future trip.
