  • Compact and very functional regional airport
  • Nice services

Flyctory.com Cons

  • Remote location with bus connection to city

Majorly because one of my favorite floorball clubs, Pixbo IBK, is located in town, I do have rather frequent trips to Gothenburg (Göteborg) in Western Sweden. While from time to time, I do use rail connections there, most of the trips require air travel. Thus, I have rather frequent trips to and from the major airport of the city, Gothenburg Landvetter Airport (GOT). Here is my airport review.

Please note that there is also the regional airport Trollhättan-Vänersborg (THN), which also operates as Göteborg Stallbacka Airport. It is not covered in this review.

Gothenburg Airport (GOT) – Location & Transport

Gothenborg Airport (GOT) is located some 25 kilometers East of the city center of Gothenburg, in the suburb of Landvetter. The airport is East of that town, so that there are no services like grocery stores around the airport. However, there are two hotels, the Landvetter Airport Hotel and the Scandic Landvetter, right at the terminal. There is also a McDonalds restaurant at the motorway 40 exit, which connects Göteborg with Jönköping and Stockholm.

There is no rail connection to the airport. If you don’t want to travel by (rental) car, the most popular option is taking one of the public bus services. The traditional option is the Flygbussarna (“Flight bus”), connecting two the city via two different routes. However, there are other bus operators like Flixbus as well. The local Västtrafik offers a bus (612) to Landvetter. Alternatively, a taxi or Uber is in the range of 40 to 60 Euro.

Gothenburg Airport (GOT) – Connections

Gothenburg Airport (GOT) is quite well connected within Europe. Obviously, the key operator is SAS Scandinavian Airlines, but there are also intercontinental connections with Air France & KLM as well as the Lufthansa Group or Finnair. Ryanair and other low-cost carriers operate point to point connections throughout the continent. At the time of writing, there is no intercontinental connection from the Swedish airport.

Arriving at Gothenburg Airport (GOT)

Gothenburg Landvetter (GOT) is a rather compact airport. The walking route from the gate to the luggage belts on the main level is typically rather short, the waiting time for luggage was absolutely fine during all of my flights there. There are no separate walking routes through the terminal after arrival, so that you can also use the services (like the stores) after you arrived in Sweden.

Departing from Gothenburg Airport (GOT)

The landside part of the terminal is like a giant hall, which has the exit from the arrivals on one end and the check-in desks arranged along one long side of the terminal. Signs are clear and there are also some services like a cafe in that part of the building. Like many airports nowadays, Gothenburg Landvetter (GOT) also has some self check-in counters.

After security, you enter the duty free store, which is absolutely fine for an airport of that size. In general, Gothenburg Airport (GOT) has some nice restaurants and services airside, i.e. after security. I also liked that there are work desks with power outlets and other services, which lead to a convenient waiting time before your flight.

Gothenburg Airport (GOT) – Services

The airport offers free WiFi. There are two lounges, the SAS Lounge Gothenburg (SAS) and The Lounge by Menzies Aviation Gothenburg (GOT). Before the Lufthansa outbound flight, on which this review is majorly based, I visited the latter one.

Gothenburg Airport (GOT) – My View

Gothenburg Landvetter (GOT) is a nice regional airport with good connections. It is more on the functional side than on the fancy one, but overall comes with a couple of good services, which make you enjoy the time before departure. The key downside is the distance to the city center. The bus services are frequent and reliable, but it is still a comparably uncomfortable way getting into the city.
