TSV Bayer Dormagen – TuS Ferndorf 24-28 (11-13)

September 2025 – back to handball! I was really flattered to be back at the TSV Bayer Sportcenter in Dormagen on 5th September 2025. TSV Bayer Dormagen hosted TuS Ferndorf in the season home opener in the 2nd Handball Bundesliga. About 1,300 people, quite a significant proportion of them from 100 km away Kreuztal, looked forward to this regional battle. Ferndorf had tied their season opened the weekend before against HSG Krefeld Niederrhein, while Dormagen had lost on the road at TuS N-Lübbecke on the first matchday. Here is my report of the match.

This posting comes with a section of 350 major size pictures in the sports galleries

TSV Bayer Dormagen – TuS Ferndorf – Match Report

Dormagen did not have a good start of the match. They did take the first lead, but then struggled in offense and faced a couple of failed attempts and technical issues. Thus, the guests had a three goal lead already in the seventh minute. However, Bayer Dormagen came back and tied the score in the 13th minute by Krischa Leis (5-5). However, especially in the first half, both teams had periods in which they struggled with their play. Ferndorf established a three goal lead (6-9, Tom Jansen, 21st) and kept it for a couple of minutes. Thus, Ferndorf felt to save a small, but safe lead. The three goal gap stayed until the 28th minute. However, Dormagen could close up the score. They could likely have tied it. However, here and there, the host acted unconcentratedly. Short before the intermission, for example, they did a technical mistake at an own free throw leading to a turnover. Nonetheless, the could close up. In the last minute, Moritz Köster scored the last goal of the first half, leading to an 11-12 score.

The match in the second half and was close and felt very similar to the game before. The score was close, Ferndorf never lead by more than one goal. Dormagen tied the score again and again, but never took the lead. Ferndorf even survived a two-man-advantage situation. In the 47th minute, it was Jansen again who scored an important goal for the guests. With the 19th goal for his team, Ferndorf took a three goal lead. Dormagen chased the guests, but trailed the whole match thereafter. The score stayed in that range, so that the fans of both teams tried to push their favorite ones. However, in the last minutes, Ferndorf raised the lead to up to five goals, so that there was not last-minute thrill. Ferndorf won the match by 28-24 on the road.

TSV Bayer Dormagen – TuS Ferndorf – My View of the Match

Both teams showed a great battle, but finally also did quite some mistakes. Thereby, TuS Ferndorf felt to be more solid and created more scores out of their chances. Additionally, you have to clearly state that only after the very first goal of the match, Dormagen has been in the lead at all. Apart from the close match at the beginning of the second half, they typically trailed by a few goals throughout the majority of the match. In their next matches at Nordhorn-Lingen and vs. Ludwigshafen, Dormagen has to gain points to leave the relegation zone of the 2nd Handball Bundesliga table.
