  • 16 songs (8 new ones)
  • Lovely variety of tracks
  • Beautiful vocals

I have featured major releases by Maddie & Tae twice already. However, the sophomore album The Way It Feels (2020) and the EP Everywhere I’m Going (2019) have both been released quite some time ago. With their third studio album overall, Love & Light, I have the opportunity again to have a deeper listen to the female country music duo. Here is my review of the 2nd May 2025 release.

Maddie & Tae – About The Artists

Maddie & Tae are Maddie Font and Tae Kerr. Font is a Texas origin artist, born on 7th July 1995. Her maiden name is Marlow, she married Jonah Font in 2019. Taylor Elizabeth Kerr (nee Dye) is from Ada in Oklahoma. She was born on 18th September 1995. The met at their vocal coach in Dallas in 2010 and formed the duo in Nashville four years later. In 2015, they released their debut album Start Here, which peaked seventh in the US (non-genre specific) album charts. On top of that, the duo released seven EPs. They topped the US Country Airplay charts twice, with Girl in a Country Song, their 2014 debut single, and Die from a Broken Heart (2019). The latter one is a four time platinum single.

Maddie & Tae – Love & Light – Track by Track

The 16 song album lasts 49 minutes.

1. Fall in Love & Find Out

Nice country rock vibes and a lot of energy, topped by the lovely vocal styles of the duo – that’s the opener Fall in Love & Find Out. The subject of the song is already somehow given in the the title, so that you can fully enjoy the Maddie & Tae style. They are doing well in the first song.

2. Any Kinda Lovin’

Half of the songs on Love & Light have been released before the album. This includes the six tracks of their September 2024 EP What A Woman Can DoAny Kinda Lovin’ is one of the songs of this release, which has been dominated by Heart They Didn’t Break. As the second of this album, the song works well and feels a nice listen. I really like the slightly calmer one.

3. One Hit Wonders

One Hit Wonders has been part of the September 2024 EP release as well. The song has a very intense and personal atmosphere, having a clear focus on the vocals of the two country ladies. After the energy of the first two songs, it is a nice opportunity to relax and become emotional. The track is obviously not dealing with music history, but is a die-hard story of a short romance.

One time, one night
You caught my eye
One look after another
One drink, one spark
One kiss in the dark
One light we’re dancing under
Who knows how long the song goes
If we follow it up or we’re just another number
All I know is I’m okay with you and me being one hit wonders

4. Heart They Didn’t Break

I already mentioned Heart They Didn’t Break above. With almost 19 million streams on Spotify so far, it is the most successful track of the album campaign. The vocal harmony works beautifully. If One Hit Wonders hasn’t warmed up your heart sufficiently, these 3:11 minutes will very likely do.

5. Only Jesus

I can love you like you don’t deserve
Take you in like the doors on a church
Forgive you every time your sorry ass comes back
But
Only Jesus gonna love you like that
Yeah
Only Jesus gonna love you like that
Amen

As a non-religious person, I struggle with reference like that. But if I leave these personal thoughts aside, Maddie & Tae indeed wrote a really lovely song here. The style is more on the country-pop side. Maddie & Tae convince on the vocal side and present a nice melody.

6. Free Like

Free Like closes the “feature” of four What A Woman Can Do songs in a row. The guitars play a significantly more important role than in the songs before again. The song has a nice groove in the stanzas, before it boosts its energy for the chorus.

7. Down That Road

A failed relationship is the story of Down That Road. Maddie & Tae turn this song into a typical country music metaphor. I like the flowy style of the song, even though the duo is also spreading some rock energy in here as well. Really nice one.

Been down that road
Had fun for a minute
‘Til love got muddy and I got stuck in it
Took more than a chain to pull my heart outta that
Been down that road, and I ain’t going back

8. Kissing Cowboys

Between the September 2024 release and Love & Light, Maddie & Tae only released two singles. One of them is this one, Kissing Cowboys. The rhythmic style with the cheeky pre-chorus leads to a very catching and modern style. Nonetheless, the song does not neglect country vibes at all. A lovely listen.

9. Somebody Will

Somebody Will opens with a guitar solo, which even feels melancholic. This is just in line with the song overall. It is rather one of these darker country music ballads. The ninth song of the record does not need to much more than the guitar and the two artists to impress.

10. Girl in Alabama

The biographies of the two ladies already tells that this one is not a song about one of them. In fact, they complain about the lack of faith of one of their previous lovers. ‘Cause you had a girl in Alabama, girl in Mississippi, one in every town, two in every city states the chorus. It later states ‘Cause your girl in Tennessee don’t want you no more. A clear message in a great song.

11. Ain’t Enough

More front-porch rockin’ while the sunset fades
More putting that phone away, less worried ’bout what other people say
We need more dinner-table good conversations
Like we need more girls on the radio stations

With Ain’t Enough, Maddie & Tae go for a more enjoyable and easy sound again. The song deals with current social life and somehow longs for having the “good old days” again. The artists put that into a really nice song.

12. What a Woman Can Do

The title track of Maddie & Tae’s previously released EP. The song is praising mother love and a young daughter. A beautiful parental advice put into gentle country music notes. The song also has some really nice elements on the instrumental side. It’s a lovely one.

13. Drunk Girls in Bathrooms

The step from What A Woman Can Do to Drunk Girls in Bathrooms couldn’t be better. Not only that the titles suggest that already, the style of this song is very different. Maddie & Tae work with a rather wide instrumentation. This song also rather reminds of a soul pop song than of country music.

14. Chasing Babies & Raising Dreams

It’s a third cup of coffee, ‘nother night of no sleep
A baby on my hip, a kiss on your cheek
Full heart, full house
It’s trippin’ over toys in the living room
Got a list a mile long of my to-dos
Yeah, it’s crazy how

I would describe the fourteenth song of Love & Light as the “female empowerment praising country song”. The song shows pride of all the achievements women manage to reach in parallel. Or to quite the lyrics: We ain’t picture-perfect, but I’d put us in a frame. Maddie & Tae turned this idea into a beautiful listen.

15. Sad Girl Summer

Guitar riffs open Sad Girl Summer and tell you that it is time for a more energetic listen again. The song is a great one for future concerts, but also for honky tonks or your next country music party. It is fun to stomp your boots to the rhythm of this track.

16. Love & Light

Ain’t there something missing? Right at the end of their 2025 record, Maddie & Tae present the title track. There is some hip hop-alike groove in Love & Light indeed, which impresses with its special, very modern style. There are just scattered moments in which you feel a few more traditional country vibes. But similar to their soul-pop voyage a few songs ago, Maddie & Tae make it.

Maddie & Tae – Love & Light – My View

Sixteen songs, eight of which are new, a nice range of different, good songs – that’s country music how I like it. Even the tracks which divert from the genre more significantly work out well. This means that Maddie & Tae did a really good job in here – and that I recommend to have a listen of Love & Light.

Favorite Song: Girl In Alabama
