Dubrovnik Old Town Impressions (Pictured Story)

Dubrovik in Southern Croatia is one of the key touristic cities at the Adriatic Sea. It also became extremely popular for cruise ship tourists. My wife and I have visited the city on a prolonged weekend. Here is a Pictured Story about the Old Town of Dubrovnik.

Dubrovnik Old Town – Location & Traffic

Dubrovnik is located on the thin coastal stripe of Croatia, at the very South of the country. As said, many people approach the town by cruise ship. The other popular option is taking a flight to Dubrovnik Airport (DBV), which is located some 20 km to the South and connected by bus services (we took a shuttle provided by the hotel). The easiest way to commute within Dubrovnik is by public transport or by taxi. There is a major bus station close to the Pile Gate of the Historic City Wall, which is an amazing walk around and one of the key attractions. The gate is also the key entrance to old town, which includes the historic harbor. Dubrovnik may be packed during peak travel times, so I would rather recommend visiting it in spring or fall, when the temperatures are still warm and no attractions are on a winter break. There are parking lots around as well, but their capacity is limited.

Views of Dubrovnik Old Town

Dubrovnik is a 40,000 people town. The Old Town is part of the UNESCO World Heritage since 1979. The history of the city is going far beyond that, first proofs of settlements there date back to the third century B.C.. The structure of the Old Town has it is today, has its roots in the 7th century. Despite the rather recent Serbian attacks, the town is in a very good condition. Its characteristic are rather larger main streets like Stradun street reaching from the Northern gate to the Old Harbor, paired with small alleys.

Nowadays, Dubrovnik Old Town features an interesting mix of historic building and touristic structure. Not only on the larger squares, you find restaurants, cafes, bars and touristic shops. Another factor which boosted the popularity of the city is that it has been used to film parts of the Game of Thrones movies. You can find souvenir stores focusing on that topic and tailored guided tours. However, the city also offers some rather iconic places like nice bakeries and typical Mediterranen hospitality. We also ran into a store specialized on Christmas items. On the darker side, you also find some witness of the Serbian-Croatian military conflict.

Old Harbor and Northern Part of the City

Even though it is nowadays only used for touristic activities, the Old Harbor of Dubrovnik is one of the must-visits in Dubrovnik Old Town. The view with the Adriatic Sea, the historic architecture and the mountains surrounding the Croatian city is memorable. This area also features some attractions of the city, like the Maritime Museum. We also took a touristic cruise from there with Adriana Cavtat. The experience was average, though.

There is a high concentration on touristic activities in the areas you saw in the pictures above and on the very popular city walls. However, it is absolutely worth to also explore the Northern part of old town. However, Dubrovnik becomes very hilly in there, small alley lead you uphill. typically using stairs. This may be physically demanding. However, you also reach areas, which are still very residential. This gives a fascinating mixture of great views and a touch of nowadays life there. A place which I absolutely loved was a basketball and sports court embedded into the city walls on the Northwest edge of this part of Dubrovnik. If you need a rest, you also find cafes and restaurants in this area – they are just less densely located.
