WFCQU19 2026: Ukraine – Hungary 2-12 (0-3, 2-3, 0-6)

On 7th February 2026, I took the earliest train from Cologne to Berlin. The sports hall of the An der Rennbahn Elementary school hosted the European World Floorball Championship Qualification for the Under 19 Girls event in Italy in May the same year. Three match days had already been played. Germany was clearly the best team, with all four remaining teams somehow battling for the second spot. My personal favorites, the Hungarian National Team, struggled so far with a tie against Austria and a – literally – last minute victory against France. On this first match of the fourth match day, they faced the Ukraine. For their first Under 19 since ten years, it was already their last match. After losing against Germany, beating France and closely being upset by Austria, they had to win to keep their chances. Hungary, who still had two matches remaining before this clash, had to win and ideally also put some buffer on their goal difference – a victory against the German National Team on Sunday felt rather unrealistic.

This posting comes with a section of 904 major size pictures in a dedicated event section of the sports galleries.

Ukraine – Hungary – Match Report

Both teams found well into the match and also had a relatable strategy and gameplay in the beginning of the match – something you might not have written about all matches of the tournament so far. However, Hungary felt to adopt better to the opponents and started to create the majority of opportunities. Finally, their first line created some floorball magic in the first half. You just cannot tell the story of the match without mentioning Csenge Gombas. She found the right spot, just as striker has to do. After eight minutes, she was the quickest for the rebound after a shot by Emma Farkas, two minutes later, she was right in the slot when Orsolya Galfi played the precise pass from behind the goal line. Thus, after ten minutes, Hungary lead 2-0.

This even gave more confidence to the Hungarian team. The defense acted in a very structured way, so that they gave netminder Iza Mihaly comparably easy tasks most of the time. However, the Ukraine did improve their game towards the first intermission. The score at that time was already 0-3, as Gombas added their third goal of the match and thus had a straight and “classic” hattrick in that game (17th minute).

Ukraine energetic at the Beginning of the Second Period

The Ukraine tried to increase pressure on the Hungarian goal from the very first moments of the second half. They dominated this part of the match, also supported by Noemi Gugg, who was sent to the pentalty bench in the 23rd minute (incorrect hit). Tetiana Kondra completed the power play successfully (24th). Her team now had the absolute momentum and thus absolutely deserved to close up even more. Sofia Hul gave the Ukraine the second goal of the match in the 27th minute.

It felt just like a matter of time that Ukraine might even tie the score, but suddenly, Hungary managed to launch better offensive plays against. Zoe Torok’s goal in the 28th minutes likely broke quite a bunch of Ukrainian hearts. The match was closer now, but also felt a bit of nervous. After a crossbar hit by Galfi (she had a similar one the day before), the referees called a video review – but due to the lack of over-the-goal cameras, these shots are extremely hard to judge. The Slovenian umpires could not decide for a goal – so the Hungarian captain did it the straight way. In the 37th minute, Gombas passed to her on the right wing. There was no defense on that part of the pitch, so that Hungary could raise the lead to three goals again. As Gombas was simply on fire this day, she added the sixth Hungarian goal in the 38th minute. Thus, Hungary even “won” the second period, even though they had so much struggle in its beginning.

Hungarian Goal Show slightly opens the WFC Qualification Door

With a three goal victory, Hungary likely would have had a very troublesome final Sunday in this qualification tournament. However, the Ukrainian lost a bit of faith. Hungary read the game very well in the third period and could also rely on Mihaly, who deservedly became their Player of the Match, despite Gombas (5+3) and Galfi (4+5) had amazing points statistics. It was Galfi, who raised the Hungarian lead to 7-2 in the 42nd minute, while Hungary added five additional goals in the last ten minutes of the game. Ironically, Ukraine’s likely most dangerous time of the third period was a first short-handed situation, when Anastasiia Sopilnuk faced a bench penalty (hands, 55th). With just four field players, her team had a couple of good opportunities.

Ukraine – Hungary – My View of the Match

Hungary delivered a strong match and a surprisingly high score, which gives them some hope qualifying for the main tournament. On the other hand, the Ukraine had a great beginning of the second period. Unluckily from their perspective, they failed to use that momentum and create mental experiences for their opponent. Nonetheless, this match was likely the best one without the German National Team being involved (they are simply too strong in that Berlin Battle…).
