Even though I was traveling on a sightseeing pass, I also visited some additional attractions during my time in New York City in late March 2024. One of these places was the National Museum of Mathematics (or, short: MoMath), located right in the heart of Manhattan. As I studied mathematics, this place felt like a must-visit to me. Here is my museum review.

 

 

 

National Museum of Mathematics – Location & Admission

The museum is located at the 5th Ave, next to E 26th St. The Madison Square Park is just across the street, other typical touristic sights in close distance are the Flatiron Building and the Museum of Sex. The two next subway stations are 28 St and 23 St, both served by lines R and W. Lines 4 and 6 (incl. express trains) are stopping at the 28 St station East of the National Museum of Mathematics.

MoMath is open seven days a week, from 10:00 to 17:00. Adult admission is 25 USD.

 

National Museum of Mathematics – The Visit

The museum is made to illustrate the power and application of mathematics, based on interactive exhibits. There is a total of 34 of them. Many have a rather geometrical background, but there are also stages about fractals, logic and other mathematical areas. Most of the spots can also be explored by children – a few of them do require a higher sense of mathematics. They might still be fun for younger visitors. At the entrance, you get an overview about all the different places in the museum.

The museum is definitely not a place for kids only. I had a lot of fun visiting it and struggling with some of the challenges I had to face. I might not be disclosing too much when I state that some of the riddles are even made in a way that you cannot solve them.

 

Special Exhibition

I visited the National Museum of Mathematics in the Easter season. Thus, the temporary exhibition in the museum was about the geometry of traditional Easter egg paintings – which I felt bring really interesting as well.

 

National Museum of Mathematics – Services

It is very handy that the museum provides lockers. Luggage and backpacks of any kind definitely disturb you and other visitors during the visit. The National Museum of Mathematics also drives a really neat and nice gift store with a wide range of items related to the topics.

 

National Museum of Mathematics – My View

I spent some 90 minutes in the museum and had a really good time. Thereby I skipped some of the very crowded exhibits, so that you easily can spend up to two hours in there. The place is a nice, interactive alternative to other museums in Manhattan. Especially with kids, it is a great place – but also grown-ups can learn a lot and have fun. I really liked it. The price feels a bit too high, though.
