Faroe Islands Fans at The EHF Euro 2026 in Oslo

Oslo in January 2026 – I will remember these days in Norway with a big smile for a long time. I have shared my love for the Faroe Islands and sports on the Faroe Islands in here multiple times. I just returned from the preliminary round of the EHF Handball Euro 2026, supporting the Faroese Men National Team at Unity Arena. I had an amazing time, together with some 6,000 to 7,000 Fans from the Nordic Island (numbers vary by source), which is more than a tenth of the total population. They turned Oslo into a Faroese exclave and a huge party zone, cheering for their team in a massive way. My way of saying thanks for this experience is by compiling some impressions of the three matches in Pictured Story format. Unfortunately, the stands in the arena, especially the upper ranks, in which I sat, were not too well illuminated, so that the picture quality is not at its best here and there.

The Faroese dominance in Group D of the championship already felt to begin at the main station. That was the place where most people boarded the bis to Unity Arena. Red white and blue were the colors at the bus stop – and in the buses thereafter. The local public transport provider Ruter even had a greeting to their most frequent riders on the screen. En route to the area, it showed Welcome to the European Championships 2026, Faroe Islands – in their own local language. Before the team was playing, there were long lines in front of the entrance to the arena – and the white handball jersey dominated the beergarden and the other entertainment places within the venue.

The most impressing experience on all three matches of the Faroe Islands was around the handball court, though. Three sides of the field, the two short sides and one long side, was almost entirely taken by the Nordics. It felt like the opponents had to play against three white walls around the sports floor. Even in the difficult moments, the fans cheered for their team. I still struggle a lot with Faroese songs, but I felt proud to be part of that crowd.

Last, but not least, these days were a big Faroese party. Due to sponsors, the Faroese fans could even enjoy a pre-match and post-match party. There were two different venues, one for two pre-match parties and one for the Sunday warm-up and the after-match events. I just made it once to them, the pre-match party on Tuesday, and left rather early. Nonetheless, I absolutely loved it. There were even Faroese music acts who stepped on stage at the Carl’s and the Gateway – the latter was just a few meters away from Unity Arena. The open-minded, friendly, and happy spirit of this massive support made Oslo – and many European handball fans – love these wonderful people. I am looking forward to the next episode of this magical sports story.
