It’s four weeks until the world of music looks at its greatest international contest again. On 16th May 2026, Vienna will host the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC). Quite many songs became legends on this evening in the past. And many countries failed to get the famous douze points. The a capella band Safer picked some of their favorite and released their EP 12 Points! on 17th April 2026. Here is my review.

Safer Six – About The Artists

Safer Six are an Austrian a capella band which has been founded in 2000. The sextet currently contains of Martin Hornig, Nick Harras, Klemens Patek, Markus Wallner, Johannes Karner and Michael Haustein. One of their biggest releases was the album Made In Austria, featuring songs of Austrian artists like Falco, Hubert von Goisern or the EAV.

Safer Six – 12 Points! – Track by Track

The five song EP lasts 17 minutes.

1. Insieme

Safter Six surprises with an Italian song as the opener. One of my favorite Italian pop songs, which gave Italy the victory in 1990. Insieme means “Together” and the unite Europe in the lyrics is more important than ever nowadays. From beat-boxing in the background to having multi-vocal lyrics – the Austrians do a great version of this legend. They still give it their very own touch. Lovely!

2. Euphoria

Loreen’s 2012 winning title is likely one of the of the most popular ESC tracks of recent years. The hymnic style of the song stays in this a capella version. The intense presence of the original is turned into a lovely ease by the six vocalists.

3. Mercie cherie

Of course, Austrians also need to go for the biggest ESC songs of their home country. The likely biggest Austrian song is Udo Jürgens’ 1966 winning one. Safer Six add more beat and groove in their 12 Points! version, but they keep the gentleness and harmony of the original. Thus, they do their version of this song just right.

4. Waterloo

There is hardly any doubt that ABBA’s Waterloo, the 1974 winning song, is the greatest ESC version of all times. The excellence in creating groove and rhythm just by their voices becomes so evident in this a capella version. However, the lack of female vocalists in the band’s lineup also makes you take some time before you really fall for this song. It is a good one – but the Safer Six! version of Insieme, for example, is closer to my 12 points.

5. Rise like a Phoenix

Conchita Wurst at B&W Hallerne in Copenhagen in 2014 – this is definitely one of the most memorable performances of the last years on ESC stages. Europe fell in love travesty character of Austrian Tom Neuwirth and the intense song. The intensity and presence of Conchita Wurst is unbeaten, but Safer Six do a really nice a cappela version, underlining their vocal excellence a final time on 12 Points!

I will add the Spotify widget once the EP has been published.

Safer Six – 12 Points! – My View

Safer Six picked five great songs of ESC and turned them into their own ones. Their interpretation are true a capella masterclass quality. The reason why I slightly struggle with the EP, which just misses a Top Pick! rating, is the excellence of the originals. Many European will have special memories and feelings towards the majority of these songs. So do I. Sometimes I initially fall in love with the new version from Austrian. But in some cases, I also think about the original too intensively. Still, this one is a good release – not only for ESC fans!
