In September 2024, I had two Rock of Ages musical amateur shows in Newcastle in Northern England. Not having too many other plans in the city, I finally made it and stayed in a hotel I had on my bucket list for quite a while. The DoubleTree by Hilton Newcastle Airport is located right next to the terminal building of Newcastle International Airport (NCL). Here is my review of the airport hotel by the Hilton brand.
DoubleTree Newcastle Airport – Location
The DoubleTree by Hilton Newcastle Airport is located right West of the terminal building. There are other airport hotels around, namely a Premier Inn and the Britainnia Hotel Newcastle Airport, which is a bit further away. Walking time between the hotel and the terminal is three to five minutes. With light luggage, you can cross a parking lot, which I would not recommend if you have major suitcases with you. Some services, which are useful for travelers, can be found in the airport. However, the landside services at Newcastle Airport (NCL) are a bit limited.
The traffic connection from the hotel are obviously rather nice. Most people will use the place for a one night stay before or after a flight from the airport. By car, you are quickly at the A696, which is a short drive away from the A1. Parking is possible at a rate of 20 GBP / night. However, the DoubleTree majorly strikes due to its public transport connections. The bus 777 connects you to Kingston Park, which features a shopping mall. Some evening / night time buses also directly connect to the center of Newcastle. The easiest option to get to Newcastle and Sunderland, however, is the Newcastle Metro, which is departing right next to the hotel. Unfortunately, you have to enter the airport terminal and head down the walkway to the metro station to get there. Direct access is blocked. Travel time to Newcastle City Center is 25 to 30 minutes.
DoubleTree Newcastle Airport – Room
I had one night in September 2024, Saturday to Sunday. The semi-flexible rate for the Queen Room was 124.75 GPB. Breakfast was included in the rate due to my Hilton Honors Diamond Status. The room was actually quite nice. It felt a bit of traditional in design, but therefor had a good size. I also appreciated that there was a fridge in the room and that the work desk gave quite some space. One thing I did not like, though, is that on neither side of the bed, there is any opportunity to charge your mobile, by power outlet or by USB.
The shower bathroom was actually quite nice. Like the whole room, it was nicely cleaned. The typical Crabtree amenities were given in dispensers. There was also sufficient space for your toiletries in the room I have been assigned to.
DoubleTree Newcastle Airport – Breakfast
DoubleTree breakfasts can range from a rather basic service to very posh ones, like at the DoubleTree Johor Bahru or the DoubleTree Jakarta – Diponegoro, which I recently introduced to you. Unfortunately, the service at DoubleTree by Hilton Newcastle Airport is rather at the lower edge. The selection is as reasonable as the quality, but it is definitely not in the upper half of my experience with the brand. Especially if you start your day here with a longer flight and don’t have lounge access (like the lovely Luxe Area of the local Aspire lounge), you will be able to fill up, but might want to long for a bit more than what you get.
DoubleTree Newcastle Airport – Service
Check-in and check-out was very friendly. I was even able to check-in earlier (maybe also due to my Hilton status) and leave my luggage in the room. The hotel also drives a nice and popular bar. The gym of the hotel is really nice and offers a view over the central parking lot and the terminal. The WiFi provided in the hotel worked nicely.
DoubleTree Newcastle Airport – My View
The DoubleTree by Hilton Newcastle Airport strikes with its location close to the airport and the lovely Metro connection into Newcastle city center. By that, it may even be a good option for a city trip. I also really liked the staff in the hotel. I do love a good hotel breakfast buffet – and that definitely was the weak spot of my stay. Nonetheless, the hotel is a good option before or after a light from Newcastle Airport (NCL).
