After I featured the German band Wucan in 2022, I am back with a review on 29th August 2025. At that day, the rock band released their fourth studio album overall, Axioms. Here is my detailed review.

Wucan – About The Artists

Wucan is a rock band from Dresden, who have been founded there in 2011. The band members are Francis Tobolsky (vocals, guitar), Tim George (guitar, keys), Alexander Karlisch (bass) and Philip Knöfel (drums). So far, the band has released three studio albums, namely Sow the Wind (2015), Reep the Storm (2017) and Heretic Tongues (2022). The latter one has been the band’s first one to make it into the German album charts.

Wucan – Axioms – Track by Track

Including a bonus track, the nine song album lasts 44 minutes

1. Spectres Of Fear

Welcome to the musical worlds of Wucan. The Dresden band showcases their music in the very first minute of their 2025 album already. The guitars are driving a speedy rock listen, accompanied by a flute, which feels to work perfectly to it. And then there is the voice of Francis Tobolsky, who adds a very special, energetic sound to Spectres of Fear. Later, the band also impresses with galloping drums and interesting keyboard lines. The opener of Axioms is definitely not a boring one.

2. Irons In The Fire

The second track of Wucan’s album is Icons in the Fire. It is one of four songs, which have been released before the album already. The song feels straighter, but still keeps the fast pace and the impressing vocals of the predecessor. The virtuosity of the song reminds me of jazz tracks. However, their musical experiments never feel too much. Especially the guitar bridge, which reminds me of surf rock, makes me smile.

3. Wicked, Sick and Twisted

Wicked, Sick and Twisted is a 5:39 minute lasting track. The guitars spread a touch of funk in here – overall, there is a cool groove in the fast-paced track. The key fact about this song is (again) that it simply works out – also when the song is slowing down a bit in later parts. Fun!

4. KTNSAX

In KTNSAX, the band is experimenting with electronic sounds, the song feels like a rocking synth-pop song. It feels like a propaganda track for a shady organisation. The band chose this one as a single release – I really like that decision.

5. Holz auf Holz

The title already suggests it – Wucan is going for a track in German. It translates to “Wood on Wood”. There is a funk layer, which is superceded by a rather alternative rock alike-sound. The lyrics remind me of German Medieval rock bands. And: the flute is back in here. I feel that the instrument is a perfect fit for that one.

6. Pipe Dreams

Pipe Dreams is another of these speedy, catching tracks on the album. Wucan works a lot with instrumental elements here again. The bridge is a key catch and a treat for fans of instrumental rock songs. Really like it.

7. Axioms

The title track Axioms is presented on the seventh spot. The song is more melodic and harmonic. In the chorus, the song becomes very hymnic. The flute parts are – again – very nice as well

8. Fountain Of Youth

Is that the ballad any rock band needs to put on their album? The first two minutes of Fountain Of Youth suggest that. However, there is still more than seven minutes left. And it just would not fit to Wucan if a song with that title would really be a slow one. But it does have a nice plot, meandering through different kinds of atmospheric. A truly epic, fascinatin ǵ

9. Four Mirrors (bonus track)

The 4:21 minute Four Mirrors has been flagged as the bonus track of the album. This time, the song stars slow – and stays slow. Not a ballad, but a beautiful narration with a nice folk music touch. I really like it!

Wucan – Axioms – My View

I like what Wucan is doing. They have a wide range of musical options – and they make use of it. Yeah, this might be confusing from time to time, but overall, the German band manages this leverage very well. Thumbs up for Axioms.
