Flyctory.com Cons

  • Limited Capacity
  • Long walk to the gates

I have been at the Schengen Austrian Airlines Senator Lounge in Vienna (VIE) so many times the last years. However, it was very often really packed and thus I never really write a review about it. At my very last flight with the Austrians in January 2025, however, the lounge was rather empty at some times. Thus, I am able to share a review with you. The lounge is also named Austrian Airlines Senator Lounge F Gates, as the vast majority of flights in that free travel area depart from the F Gates. Here is my lounge review with you, after I have already published my view on Austrian Airlines Non-Schengen Senator Lounge at the same airport with you.

Austrian Airlines Senator Lounge Vienna (VIE) Schengen – Location & Access

The lounge is located right above the gate area and the duty free shop. In fact, Austrian Airlines drives three lounges at the same place, which all share the same reception desk. Apart from the Senator Lounge, there is also the Austrian Airlines Business Lounge and a lounge for HON Circle Members and First Class flyers (on Lufthansa and Swiss connections – Austrian does not have that service). Right after security, you head up an escalator or elevator to the upper level. This is the same route you take when you head to the G-Gates / Non-Schengen Gates. While their passport control is on the left, you head a passageway to the right, overlooking the landside area of the airport. The Austrian Airlines Senator Schengen Lounge at Vienna Airport (VIE). The entrance to the SKY Lounge is right next to the entrance to the Austrian Lounges.

The lounge is opening daily from 5:30 to 22:30. You need to be on a Star Alliance flight to access to the lounge. Furthermore, access is restricted to Miles & More Senator travelers and other Star Alliance Gold members. You should be aware that if you are heading to the gate, you first need to go downstairs, cross the duty-free and restaurant area of the airport and then head to the long aisle of the gates. Even if your gate is rather close to the duty-free, it may easily take you ten minutes or more to walk there.

Austrian Airlines Senator Lounge Vienna (VIE) Schengen – Atmosphere

The lounge is located on your left, after you checked in at the reception desk. You more or less are right at the food and bar area, which comes with bistro style seating. While the individual tables do not have any energy supply, while the majority of the other seats is having access to power sockets. On the right wing of the lounge, there are other seating options, like a work desk table at the windows or some more cozy and comfortable options. This part of the lounge is also having a window overlooking parts of the airport gates. As said, the lounge tends to be packed – maybe the changes in the Miles & More program lead to some capacity relief. A nice feature is that there a two phone / video call cabins next to the sliding doors at the entrance.

Austrian Airlines Senator Lounge Vienna (VIE) Schengen – Food & Drink

The food and drink area is nice. There is a selection of breads, salads and fruit. Warm dishes are typically served from a separate station by a member of the lounge staff. Most of the time, there is one vegetarian option and a non-vegetarian one. Soft drinks are typically self-service from two fridges, while the rear side of the buffet also offers some wine and spirits. Overall, the selection is fine and the quality is good – other lounge do give a better range of items, though.

Austrian Airlines Senator Lounge Vienna (VIE) Schengen – Services

The three Austrian Airlines lounges for the F-Gates share bathroom facilities. You access them from the reception area. You can also book a shower at the reception. WiFi is provided by the airport and worked very well during my visits.

Austrian Airlines Senator Lounge Vienna (VIE) Schengen- My View

The key issue of the Austrian Airline Senator Lounge at the Vienna F-Gates is capacity. The lounge is not overwhelmingly large – and that also reduces the possibility to have more food and drink options. Even the size of the toilets feels a bit small, regarding that they have to serve three lounges. Austrian Airlines does manage the space in a smart way, but this may still lead to a packed and thus a bit stressful experience. Thus, it is a good lounge, but definitely not a top product – especially regarding that Vienna Airport (VIE) is the hub of the airline.
