The last review of a venue experience I had during a weekend in Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games is the Arena Porte de La Chapelle. The indoor arena, which is also known as Adidas Arena, hosts several disciplines during the sports event. On 27th July 2024, my wife and I visited a preliminary round match session in the badminton competition. For 100 Euro each, we had a seat at the short side of the venue, which hosted four matches in a row on each of the three courts installed.
Arena Porte de La Chapelle – Location & Transport
For the Olympic Games, the area is named after the borough of Paris, where it is located, Porte de La Chapelle. It is rather in the North of Central Paris. The arena is located in an area with residences, shops and also some hotels around.
Tram and bus lines connect to the area. Furthermore, the arena is close to the Boulevard Peripherique and thus rather easy to reach by car as well (if there are no Olympic road closures). The easiest way to get there by from Central Paris is definitely the metro, though. The station Porte de la Chapelle is served by line 12, which is also serving Place de la Concorde or Pigalle. Walking distance from there is short, even though the entrance to the arena is moved to the very East side for the Olympic Games.
Arena Porte de La Chapelle – The Arena
The arena has a capacity of 8,000 people for sports competitions in the main arena. There are also two sports halls for recreational sports of the locals. It has been opened in early 2024 and hosts basketball matches of Paris Basketball outside the Olympic Games. As it is roughly just half the size of Accor Arena, it is also very popular for concerts. From the ground level, you have to take stair or the elevator to the stands. There are designated stairways for each section, but you can finally walk around the arena on the upper level.
The arena has been built using a lot of recycled material. I did not like the seats too much, they felt rather hard and stiff. However, the view from our seats was very nice, even though the view to the rear court was slightly obstructed. The screens and sound in the arena was very good as well.
Arena Porte de La Chapelle – Atmosphere
Apart from that badminton is generally a very interesting and catching sports to watch, the atmosphere in the arena was really nice. Despite we “just” saw round robin group matches, The sports is very popular in Asia, so that the crowd was very international. This lead to a really nice atmosphere. Some very close matches added a lot to that. Even matches with a rather clear score felt very attractive and had been appreciated by the people in the arena. From our seats, we could see the athletes during their post-match interviews, which I really liked.
Arena Porte de La Chapelle – Eat & Drink
Sandwiches, some sweet snacks, chips – food at the Paris 2024 Olympics simply did not match my expectations. There was just one major stand for food, which typically ha rater long lines. Prices were rather reasonable, though. Funnily, the drink stand right outside the arena did not only sell larger sizes, but also had (relatively) lower prices than the one in the arena.
In a rather large section of the venue, there was a nice merchandise store as well. Unfortunately, you weren’t allowed to visit the store at the end of the session, even though there was still a match running (and there was just a one three-set match in the whole session). You could also not return your deposit drink cups at the end of the session, which I felt being rather questionable.
Arena Porte de La Chapelle – Services
There was a badminton court and some place to hang out outside the arena. This was quite nice. Apart from the water dispenser, which you could find (if you it…) in any venue, there were not too many services at Arena Porte de La Chapelle. The toilets in the venue rather reminded me of better German motorway rest areas. They were also rather unfortunately located, the signs were a bit of hidden. As in all venues, some of the security staff and volunteers refused speaking English.
Arena Porte de La Chapelle – My View
Regarding the sports, badminton was definitely the most fun event we watched. We had a very entertaining time in the over three hour session. The arena is modern and nice, but food services as well as the seats did not leave fully pleasing memories. Nonetheless, Arena Porte de La Chapelle was a good experience.
