After the Rock Meets Country Festival in Switzerland in September 2025, I needed another night on the way home. As my rental car was by Hertz in Basel, I also opted for the hotel there and stayed at the ibis Basel Bahnhof (“Train Station”). Here is my review.

ibis Basel Bahnhof – Location & Access
The hotel is located at the Southwest edge of Basel SBB (Swiss main) station. You can easily access the hotel by taking escalators or an elevator from the Southern side of the train station and then walk along the Meret-Oppenheim-Strasse, at which’s end the ibis Basel Bahnhof is located. You can also go there by car – the hotel is driving a parking garage. Most local transport from the train station is at its Northern side, which is a bit of unfortunate if you opt for this stay. However, there is a tram station (IWB, lines 2 and 16) almost in front of the hotel.
Around the ibis Basel Bahnhof, there are numerous other services like bars, restaurants, and similar. The main station also features helpful services, including a major Migros supermarket as well as a smaller coop grocery store. Walking time to the train station is about five minutes and slightly hilly.

ibis Basel Bahnhof – The Room
I had a standard double bed room in September 2025,. The flexible rate from Sunday to Monday was 175.35 CHF and included breakfast and a 16:00 late check-out. The latter was charged with 30 CHF. The room came with the typical ibis layout and design and was rather functional than appealing. To me, a really nice feature of the hotel was the large work desk. Most of the power outlets are in the corner of the room, at the edge of the work desk, and feature the typical Swiss design. Overall, I had sufficient space to store my camera equipment and work from the ibis room.

In line with the living / sleeping area, the bathroom did lot lead to any surprises. The typical ibis design is compact, but still has some space to store your toiletries. The shower had a nice size as well. Basic typical amenities are provided in dispensers. The whole room, including the bathroom, was well-cleaned and well-maintained.

ibis Basel Bahnhof – Breakfast
The mood in the breakfast area was a bit of hectic – which was rather caused by guests than by the staff. Even compared to other places of the Accor brand, the hotel serves a rather basic breakfast buffet, which is nicely presented. Thus, I overall had a fine morning meal at the ibis Basel Bahnhof.

ibis Basel Bahnhof – Services
The staff in the hotel was very friendly. Communication in English was partially easier in English as some parts of the staff had Italian origin. The complimentary WiFi in the hotel had a very good stability and speed, so that I could work from the hotel during daytime. If you want to explore Basel, you get a free public transport ticket for the city, valid for your entire stay.
ibis Basel Bahnhof – My View
Other hotel options around Basel’s main station were either too expansive or did not offer a late check-out. Thus, I was very pleased with the services provided. Overall, the hotel is handy. If you want to explore the city, I would rather check out one of the locations North of the tracks, simply due to the easier and wider access to local transport. Apart from minor breakfast issues and quantity provided, it was a nice, but a bit of expansive stay.
