  • Very interesting and unique museum
  • Very good presentation
  • Central location

There are so many different kinds of museums all over the world. However, when I visited Innsbruck in late October 2024, I was really curious about the Audioversum (fully named Audioversum Science Center) there. The museum is concentrating on listening and acoustics. I felt that this is a really interesting topic and felt to share this place with you.

Audioversum – Location & Admission

The Audioversum is located in the Wilhelm-Greil-Straße in the heart of Innsbruck. It shares the building with a theater. There are a couple of stores and restaurants around. If you come by car, you should park outside the center and walk in or use public transport. The nearby stop Triumphpforte / Casino is served by tram lines F and R as well as bus lines 404 and 412

The museum is closed on Mondays. On all other days, opening times are 10:00 to 18:00. Admission closes 30 minutes earlier. However, if you want to visit all exhibits, you should at least arrive 60 to 90 minutes before closing. Adult admission is 12 Euro. It includes all exhibitions. The Innsbruck Card is accepted.

Audioversum – The Visit

The main exhibition is named Abenteuer Hören (“The Adventure of Hearing”). It tells you how hearing in general is working, but majorly concentrates on different listening experiences. This includes different sounds, which occur in everyday life, interactive listening exhibits, but also a room with modern classic music. Overall, this leads to a wide range of listening experiences and you get to learn a lot about your own ear. One part is also a VR rollercoaster simulator, which shows you how you can cheat your sense of balance.

Another part of the permanent exhibits is the Med-El World, named after a company supporting the museum. You majorly learn about hearing-aid technology, but there are also some interactive exhibits. These turn the museum also into a very interesting visit for families. The general documentation is in German and English. Detailed information and some audio excerpts may be German only, though.

Temporary Exhibits

During my visit, there was a temporary exhibition about dubbers and movie dubbing. This one has been really interesting. It introduced different dubbers, but also speaking techniques. You could also do voice training and dub a section of a movie by yourself, which was entertaining, but also educative. I really liked that part of my visit. Despite the rather small exhibition space, I spent quite a lot of time in there.

Another interesting part of the museum visit has been Tatort: Audioversum (“Crime Scene: Audioversum”). Going through different stages and riddles, you were able to solve a criminal case. By that, you also learned about sharpening your senses and how investigations are working. This part of the Audioversum has been another one which has been very popular among families.

Audioversum – Services

The staff was very helpful and friendly. There are lockers and a small snack and drink point close to the reception desk. The entrance area also features a rather large museum store with quite a wide range of items.

Audioversum – My View

The Audioversum has a really interesting exhibition, which is suitable for adults and young visitors. The location is very central and the mission of the museum is quite unique, so that I definitely recommend a visit there if you are in the Austrian city.
